Share:ArticleThe importance of early detection and treatment for reducing the mortality associated with sepsis has been a tenet of medical training since the middle ages, when it was noted that “. . . the physicians say it happens in hectic fever, that in the beginning of the malady it is easy to cure but difficult to detect, but in the course of time, not having been either detected or treated in the beginning, it becomes easy to detect but difficult to cure.”1,2 The critical role of the clinician in the early recognition of sepsis continues to this day to be fundamental to our efforts to improve the rate of survival.3 Identification of the combination of signs and symptoms that make up the systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS)4 in the context of an infection allows the astute clinician to recognize the malady. Early recognition of sepsis was incorporated into the trial design, prompts, and protocols of the Protocolized Care for Early Septic Shock (ProCESS) trial, the results of which are now reported in the Journal.5 For all the groups in the trial, the goal was early recognition of sepsis, as specified in the Surviving Sepsis Campaign guidelines,3 and the design called for early treatment with antimicrobial agents6 and conservative transfusion thresholds; in addition, the patients received low tidal-volume ventilation and had moderate glycemic control. Indeed, septic shock was recognized early in a majority of the patients; 76% of the patients received antimicrobial agents by the time they underwent randomization, which occurred a mean of approximately 3 hours after patients' arrival in the emergency department. The rate of intravenous antimicrobial administration 6 hours after randomization was approximately 97%, a finding that suggests that notification that septic shock is present encourages the administration of antibiotics. A study that attributed increased mortality to delays in the administration of appropriate antibiotics6 suggested that early administration of antibiotics increased survival in all groups of the trial. Indeed, in the ProCESS trial, the early or facilitated recognition of septic shock, administration of intravenous antibiotics, and other best practices were associated with rates of survival that were higher than projected and higher than predicted on the basis of scores on the Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II,7 and a thoughtful design allowed the sample size of the trial to be recalculated to preserve the power of the study to test the primary outcome. One important contribution of the ProCESS trial is the evidence it provides regarding the ongoing role of early recognition of and antibiotic treatment for sepsis in improving survival. The ProCESS trial also provides transformative insights about the treatments for septic shock that bring generalizable benefits when septic shock is recognized in the first hours after arrival in the emergency department. The use of central hemodynamic and oxygen-saturation monitoring in the protocol-based early goal-directed therapy (EGDT) group did not result in better outcomes than those that were achieved with clinical assessment of the adequacy of circulation. The finding that adjusting therapies to surrogate physiological targets measured with invasive catheters was not required to reduce mortality is consistent with the results of a study that showed that serial measurement of blood lactate levels was noninferior to catheter-derived measurements8 and of analyses that have not found benefits of the use of pulmonary-artery catheters.9 State legislation and clinical guidelines, including those endorsed by the National Quality Forum, should be updated to remove the requirement for central hemodynamic monitoring and to focus on less costly, lower-risk, and equally effective alternatives. The association of the implementation of the multifaceted EGDT intervention with significantly lower mortality in an earlier study10 launched the EGDT era of sepsis management. This milestone study encouraged coordinated efforts3 to improve the outcomes in patients with this common11 and life-threatening condition. These efforts translated into the earlier identification of septic shock and into an increased number of patients receiving earlier administration of a larger volume of resuscitation fluid. The ProCESS trial allows refinement of the EGDT approach to fluid administration by defining lower boundaries that are associated with equivalent outcomes and setting limits that are needed to avoid the twin problems of renal failure from too little fluid and pulmonary dysfunction from fluid overload. Another interesting and seemingly paradoxical finding is that patients in whom sepsis was managed without a protocol had an outcome as good as those in patients in whom the sepsis was managed with the use of a protocol. If one assumes that the treatments for septic shock, as well as the timing of the treatments, that would be administered in all emergency departments, regardless of size or available resources, would be equivalent to those used in the no-protocol (usual-care) group of the ProCESS trial (which included strategies for early recognition of sepsis), one could come to the dubious conclusion that protocols and decision prompts do not have a role in the treatment of septic shock. I prefer to think differently. I believe that the prompting, serum lactate screening and assessment of SIRS criteria, and reporting of activities that were parts of the study by Rivers et al. and the ProCESS trial can be applied in clinical practice to ensure early diagnosis and treatment for all patients with septic shock. The ProCESS trial identifies early recognition of sepsis, early administration of antibiotics, early adequate volume resuscitation, and clinical assessment of the adequacy of circulation as the elements we should focus on to save lives. The publication of the ProCESS trial launches the era of early recognition and treatment in the management of sepsis. (SitNews) - Tuesday the Alaska State Senate passed historic legislation to create the framework for the State to take an equity share in the Alaska Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) project. Senate Bill 138 sets a roadmap forward for building a large- diameter gasline, which would create a world-scale infrastructure investment supplying domestic gas to Alaskans and exporting Alaska gas to Asian-Pacific markets. Governor Sean Parnell praised the Senate today for passing his legislation to advance a large-diameter Alaska natural gas pipeline project. “I applaud the Senate for voting today to advance the Alaska LNG Project and ensure Alaska’s gas is maximized for Alaskans’ benefit,” Governor Parnell said. “Our legislation paves the way for Alaskans to become owners in the project and ensures an open, public process going forward. I look forward to working with the House in the coming weeks to pass our legislation on Alaska’s terms and in Alaskans’ interests. Senate Bill 138 is the enabling legislation that allows the Administration to negotiate ?rm contracts with the parties to the Heads of Agreement (HOA) and the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) reached in January 2014 between the State, the Alaska Gasline Development Corporation (AGDC), ConocoPhillips, BP, ExxonMobil, and TransCanada, which stated all parties are in alignment. The agreements represent the first step on the path to full, legally binding contracts and set out roles and responsibilities of the parties before finalized contracts are drawn up. Currently, the project consists of three related mega-projects including a gas treatment plant on the North Slope, an 800-mile large-diameter pipeline from the North Slope to Nikiski, and an LNG export facility at Nikiski. Another major component calls for at least ?ve off-take points for gas consumption within the state. “The Senate took into account three principles as it considered this legislation: Should we participate? If so, at what percentage? And lastly, what will be the process to advance Alaska’s LNG project?” said Senator Anna Fairclough (R-East Anchorage/Eagle River). “We’ve waited for decades to see this legacy project come to life. I believe now, after the work done on this bill, we are looking at the right gas at the right time. We have found a way to bring affordable energy to Alaskans while fortifying the State’s treasury and economy for generations to come. It’s time to act and that’s exactly what the Senate did today. “Alaska is resource- rich and natural gas is abundant. This is the fourth plan in recent years to bring that gas to the homes of Alaskans,” said Senate Resources Chair Cathy Giessel (R-Anchorage Hillside/Turnagain Arm/N. Kenai). “SB 138 allows us to develop the project engineering and construction plans, while the fiscal details are also scrutinized. The Legislature will continue to carefully evaluate this project and the State’s potential investment, looking forward to a future of opportunity. The Senate made several improvements to Senate Bill 138. One of the most significant changes increases the production tax on gas from 10.5% to 13%. The intent is to set the State’s equity share in a North Slope natural gas pipeline project at 25%, when combining the gas tax with the royalty percentages due to the state. “Business as usual has prevailed in our effort to get gas from the North Slope. But business as usual has gotten us no gas,” said Senator Pete Kelly, (R-Fairbanks). “That’s why I like the approach of SB138 - it’s different from anything we’ve done and I think it will work. The Senate also added a provision which puts AGDC in charge of the Alaska LNG project instead of a subsidiary. The language enables AGDC to enter into contracts relating to the LNG project, but only after consulting with Commissioners from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Department of Revenue (DOR). It also requires AGDC’s board to appoint a program director to manage the Alaska LNG Project so it doesn’t interfere with the State’s commitment to maintain progress on the Alaska Stand Alone Gas Pipeline (ASAP) project, which passed the Legislature last year with the goal of delivering affordable gas to Alaskans through an in-state small-diameter gasline. As part of the Senate’s lengthy discussions on SB138, members of both the Resources and Finance Committees also investigated thoroughly whether TransCanada was the right partner to help finance the mega-project. “The answer to that question is yes,” said Senator Fairclough. “Deals like these hinge on the concept of ‘Risk and Reward’ and we need to make sure Alaskans receive the maximum possible benefit from our natural resources. That also means we do not put Alaskans in a place where we finance ourselves into massive debt,” said Senator Fairclough. “Right now, if the State ‘goes it alone’, we could possibly max out our credit rating. At that point, the State would start losing its ability to borrow. That’s not something we want to see. TransCanada’s participation would allow the State to retain 25-percent of the gas share for only 18-percent of the costs upfront. The Senate’s discussions on SB138 also examined the topic of what kind of compensation municipalities and boroughs would receive for the impact on their communities. That’s why the Senate added a provision directing the Governor to establish an advisory board on municipal involvement in a North Slope natural gas project. “The benefits available to all Alaskans due to the provisions of SB 138 are undeniable, from jobs to lower-cost energy, as well as rural energy project funding and LNG export revenue,” explained Senator Peter Micciche (R-Soldotna). “Also considered was a municipality’s right to tax jurisdictional infrastructure and potential construction and operational impacts. Therefore, the bill includes an Interim Advisory Board in Section 58 that ensures municipalities an active voice in local taxation and community impact discussions. “The last elected job I held prior to serving in the Senate was Soldotna’s Mayor,” continued Micciche. “I understand both the benefits and impacts of such projects in our cities. Therefore, the Senate worked as a team to identify an avenue that keeps municipalities represented in an effort to answer concerns we heard from affected municipal leaders along the route of the project from the North Slope to the Nikiski terminus. In order to help rural Alaskans, Senator Lyman Hoffman (D-Bethel), inserted language into SB138 to ensure the gasline helps lower energy costs for all Alaskans, regardless of whether they get the natural gas directly. The new Alaska Affordable Energy fund will be used to develop energy infrastructure in areas that do not have direct access to a North Slope gas pipeline. The fund will receive ten percent of all revenue received from the State’s royalty gas transported in the Alaska LNG project, after paying the Alaska Permanent Fund its share of that royalty. SB138 also directs the Alaska Energy Authority to develop a plan extending energy infrastructure to parts of the state without direct access to a North Slope natural gas pipeline. “This bill does two things Alaskans have been waiting for-the first is to monetize Alaska’s abundant natural gas resources and the second is to have affordable energy for all Alaskans,” said Senator Hoffman. “With the amendment passed last week in the Senate Finance Committee and the passage of the bill today the Senate has taken a giant step to make both a reality. Senate Democrats offered 16 amendments to defend Alaska sovereignty, protect property tax payers and potential Alaska gas consumers. SB138 also includes a section introduced by Senator Lesil McGuire (R-Anchorage) known as ‘Pick.Click.Invest’ which would direct the DOR to work with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to create the best way for Alaskans to use their PFDs to invest in the gasline. The Senate Finance Committee later added a provision to require that the DOR’s plan for Alaska ownership must include ownership opportunities for municipalities and for Native corporations. “I believe this will get Alaskans reinvigorated about our robust oil and gas industry by allowing them the opportunity to have an equity share in the project, or, in other words, own a piece of the pipe,” said Senator McGuire. “This amendment would essentially allow Alaskans to buy stock in the pipeline and earn interest on their investment. Construction of the pipeline is expected to add anywhere from 9,000 to 15,000 jobs to Alaska’s work force. In order to make sure Alaskans are the ones ready to fill these high paying positions, Senator Click Bishop (R-Fairbanks) added language to the bill to expand the existing oil and gas producer education tax credit to include contributions to nonprofit regional training centers recognized by the Department of Labor and Workforce Development, and for vocational education, equipment and facilities. “We learned an important lesson from the construction of TAPS,” said Senator Click Bishop (R-Fairbanks). “And that was if we want to hire Alaskans, we have to train them for the jobs. We have worked hard over the past decade to create training programs to get that done. Last, but not least, SB138 starts a gated approach to building the gasline which offers off-ramps if the State, or any of the other parties in the agreement, want to end their participation after the preliminary front end engineering design (Pre-FEED), or front end engineering design (FEED) phases, but before the final investment decision (FID). “It took the Alaska State Legislature in 1973 to prevent Alaskans from owning a portion of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline,” said Senator Fairclough. “Today, the Senate voted to not repeat history and took the next step in a long process to a provide energy relief to Alaskans and economic opportunities for our children. Senator Bert Stedman (R-Sitka) voted against the Governor’s proposed Liquefied Natural Gas Pipeline Project. Stedman represents District Q which includes Ketchikan, Sitka, Wrangell, Haines, Metlakatla, Craig, Klawock, Hoonah, Kake, Thorne Bay, Angoon, Saxman, Hydaburg, Coffman Cove , Naukati, Hollis, Klukwan, Hyder, Pelican, Kasaan, Port Alexander, Port Protection, Edna Bay, Whale Pass, Elfin Cove, Point Baker, & Meyers Chuck. In explanation of his vote agaomst SB 138, Senator Stedman said in a prepared statement, "My vote against SB 138 was not a vote against a natural gas pipeline." Stedman said his objection comes from the fact that the state’s interests as a sovereign are not in alignment with the inclusion of TransCanada owning the state’s share of the pipeline and gas treatment plant. Stedman said, "There are many troubling risks to the state from this megaproject including: low gas prices due to a potential oversupply from competing international projects under development; the state’s lack of expertise and ability to market its share of the gas received in lieu of royalties and taxes; and handing over the state’s ownership share of the pipeline and gas treatment plant to TransCanada. The last point is what gives me the most indigestion. Make no mistake; the producing companies (ExxonMobil, BP, and ConocoPhillips) and not the state are in control of moving this pipeline project forward said Stedman. "TransCanada is a pipeline company but who actually builds this pipeline will be decided by ExxonMobil with concurrence from BP and ConocoPhillips. TransCanada is simply acting as our lender to cover the upfront project costs at a guaranteed rate of return through construction. The deal looks like this: TransCanada will hold an ownership interest in the gas treatment plant and the pipeline equal to the state’s estimated 25% share of the gas; the state would have a one-time option to buy back up to a 40% of its ownership interest from TransCanada so long as TransCanada’s share doesn’t fall below 14% leaving the state with only an 11% ownership interest. Furthermore, regardless of whether the state exercises its option to buy an ownership interest from TransCanada, we are obligated to pay TransCanada’s development costs plus an interest rate of 7.1% if the project is not sanctioned. "The state entered into an agreement like this with TransCanada once before when the legislature passed the Alaska Gasline Inducement Act (AGIA) in 2007," stated Stedman. "That law guaranteed the state would reimburse TransCanada up to $500 million for costs incurred related to the development of a large diameter gas pipeline through Canada. Today, most legislators would agree that tying ourselves to TransCanada through AGIA was a mistake. I’m concerned that we didn’t learn our lesson and we’re making the same mistake again but instead of a $500 million mistake, this could turn out to be a multi-billion dollar mistake. Stedman said, " I’m uncomfortable supporting this proposed commercial arrangement that doesn’t align the state’s interests with ExxonMobil, BP and ConocoPhillips. These companies will see to it that this project is profitable for them or they won’t proceed. Similarly, TransCanada is guaranteed to make a handsome profit. Unfortunately it looks to me like the state of Alaska as a sovereign and the owner of the oil and gas resource is assuming the most exposure and risk. Making a bad situation worse, reduced revenue from oil taxes will result in year after year deficit spending to balance our budget, depleting our savings accounts around the same time pipeline construction will begin. Stedman said, "One of our own legislative consultants hired by the Legislative Budget and Audit Committee warned, “In its totality, however, the proposal will result in a radical departure from the State’s historical position and role as a Sovereign, as a Royalty Owner, as a Taxation Authority and as a Regulator which raises a number of issues and presents substantial risks. A sole source, non-competitive bid resulting in a multi-generational contract with TransCanada is not in the state’s best interest said Stedman. "In my opinion, the Legislature should put SB 138 on the shelf and work on it over the interim. We have the time and the obligation to do it right. Apart from a super-sharp screen, the Find 7 comes packing a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at 2.5GHz, 3GB RAM and 32GB of onboard storage. Other specs include a 3,000mAh battery, a 13-megapixel camera with dual-LED flash. The Find 7 will support a wide range of LTE bands and should work in most countries as well as in China, Mexico and the U.S. The smartphone runs a custom firmware called ColorOS, that's based on Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean). The specs alone of the Find 7 are likely overkill for the average user, so Oppo will be offering a full-HD version (1,920x1,080-pixels) but it has less storage (16GB), a slightly slower quad-core processor (2.3GHz) and a 2,800mAh battery instead. Also announced at the event was a fitness band called O Band, which tracks your sleep patterns as well. The Debentures have been rated BBB (high), stable trend, by DBRS Limited and Baa2, Stable Outlook, by Moody's Investors Service. The Debentures will bear interest at a rate of 5.90% per annum, payable semi-annually in arrears in equal instalments on January 4 and July 4 of each year, commencing on January 4, 2008. The Debentures will mature on July 4, 2047. The Debentures have not been and will not be registered under the US Securities Act of 1933, as amended, and may not be offered or sold in the United States to any person absent registration or an applicable exemption from registration requirements. Fernando Dias was speaking to Angop about food quality in Angola, saying the improvement of the quality of food in the country requires a huge financial investment as the source of the foodstuffs often poses many health hazard. The official also mentioned the food manufactured and sold on streets without a minimum of hygiene. "Currently, a large part of the meals eaten by Angolans is purchased from the informal market or from streets. This food has no nutrients whatsoever with many bacteria, because the exposition to dust and sun," he stressed. UNITED NATIONS, March 18 -- The UN says it is for press freedom, but on March 18, UN Peacekeeping chiefHerve Ladsous told the Security Council of "unacceptable vilification of the UN by some... media articles. After the meeting, while neither Ladsous nor the UN's envoy to South Sudan Hilde Johnson came to answer questions, the president of the Security Council for March, Sylvie Lucas of Luxembourg, did. Inner City Press asked her about Ladsous' line, and if the UN and Security Council were now in the business of critiquing articles in countries with peacekeeping missions. Lucas, who has held more stakeouts this month by far that recent presidencies, replied by citing a protest sign depicting Hilde Johnson and a revolver. Inner City Press has seen a picture of the sign - but it is well within the bounds of protected First Amendment speech and protest in the US. South Sudan's Permanent Representative Francis Deng, himself a former UN official, said that the government plans to "contain hostile publicity. Already, Ladsous refuses to answer Press questions on topics ranging from the introduction of cholera in Haiti torapes by the UN's partners in the Congolese Army in Minova, video here. Now when the UN speaks on unacceptable media articles, what does it mean? Salva Kiir's information minister said that to broadcast interviews with rebels into South Sudan would be illegal. A Kiir adviser admitted his government gives "advise" to journalists on what and what not to write -- just as Inner City Press has been told, in connection with UN Accreditation, how to write about Ladsous. This is called censorship. Now Ladsous explicitly joins the censors. Some say it's Ladsous who should be censured -- if, that is, the UN believes in free press. Though it was UN Peacekeeping own admitted "error" that gave rise to articles, Ladsous now blames the government for not agreeing to a joint investigation. He said, "We offered to the Government to conduct a joint investigation, to prove our good faith and provide full transparency. Unfortunately, the offer was declined. Back on March 6, the UN issued a rare admission of error, saying that contrary to policy weapons were moved by road, not air, in South Sudan for the Ghana peacekeepers recently arrived from Cote d'Ivoire. Juba, 6 March 2014: It is the policy of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) that during the crisis in South Sudan all arms and ammunition for peacekeeping contingents are flown into respective areas of deployment and not taken by road. This is an important security measure. In connection with the transport of cargo of general goods belonging to the Ghanaian battalion on its way to Bentiu, several containers were wrongly labelled and inadvertently contained weapons and ammunition. This is regrettable. The Ghanaian troops are part of the surge of UNMISS troops to assist South Sudan and the goods were en route to Bentiu, passing through Rumbek. UN Headquarters intends to dispatch a high level investigation team to look into this matter on an urgent basis, in cooperation with the Government of South Sudan. Nvidia: Does It Have More Juice? Mar. There has been around a 44% appreciation in NVDA's valuations since the last year or so. The competitors of Nvidia in this regard include companies such as Qualcomm , MediaTek, Samsung Electronics and Marvell Technologies. The primary question for prospective investors is the viability of this investment after the recent surge in valuations. Nvidia Corporation (NVDA) is a technology company operating in the industry of specialized semiconductors. The company was founded in 1993 and is headquartered in Santa Clara, California. Nvidia leverages its graphics technologies to create graphic processing units. These graphic chips have applications ranging from mobiles and PCs to high performance computing. Two technologies are the backbone of the company's business, its GPUs and the Tegra processor. GPUs, as the name suggests, are graphic processors with densely packed transistors for high graphics performance. The company has specific GPU brands for different users; GeForce for gamers, Quadro for designers, Tesla for researchers and Grid for server graphics modules. Essentially, Nvidia's GPU segment serves markets like gaming, enterprise and cloud computing. The primary competitor of the company in this space is Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). The company generated around 84% of its revenue from this segment during the fiscal year ended 2014. Tegra is an SOC (system on a chip) designed to cater the needs of the high growth mobile and portable devices market. Tegra SOCs incorporate CPU, GPU, audio/video and input/output capabilities. These chips can also be integrated with communication modems that enable phone and data communication. Tegra is essentially a complete solution for mobile devices and is featured in several smartphones and tablets. The competitors of Nvidia in this regard include companies such as Qualcomm (QCOM), MediaTek, Samsung Electronics and Marvell Technologies (MRVL). The company generated around 10% of its revenue from this segment in the fiscal year 2014. The remaining revenue was generated from the cross licensing agreement with Intel (INTC). Shares of Nvidia Corporation are listed on NASDAQ and are currently trading at around $18. Investors are currently paying approximately $25 for $1 of earnings generated by Nvidia. There has been around a 44% appreciation in valuations since the last year or so. The company surpassed analyst EPS estimates by an average 20% in the past four quarters which is one the reasons behind the recent valuation surge. Announcements regarding the Tegra K1 and the Maxwell architecture have also contributed to the valuation growth in the last month. The power efficiency claims related to Maxwell and the performance claims related to Tegra K1 may have driven the prices upwards. We will analyze these claims later on. Nvidia posted a revenue figure of $4.13 billion in the fiscal year ended January 2014. The revenue declined by 4% as compared to the previous year. Despite a 7% growth in the core GPU business, the overall revenue went down due to a decrease in the revenues of the Tegra segment. The company stated that the revenue decline in Tegra is a consequence of the transition from Tegra 3 to Tegra 4, but we believe this is not entirely the case. The revenues of Q4 2014 attributed to Tegra 4, declined by 37% as compared to the revenues in the same quarter last year. This indicates that the company is facing stiff competition from other SOC companies like Qualcomm. Tegra has been lagging behind Qualcomm's offerings in terms of performance. Therefore, the product offerings of Nvidia have not been as competitive as others and have caused the revenues to decline. Note that this is not expected to be reflected in future performance, which we will discuss later on. The GPU revenue is showing a year-on-year increase reflecting the constantly improving graphics technology of the company. Revenues from Tegra are volatile amidst stiff competition from Qualcomm and others. The net income of the company also declined in the fiscal year ended January 2014. This decline was partially attributed to the decline in revenues and partially to the 12% increase in operating expenses during the reporting period. The operating expenses increase was due to an increase in employees and related expenses. As Nvidia is focused on rolling out the Maxwell architecture and K1 processors, the operating expenses are justified. The increase in expenses has resulted in a declining EPS as shown above. Revenues were pressured by the slowing PC demand and less competitive Tegra business, but expenses were increased to support the upcoming product rollouts and resulted in the reduced EPS. Note that this trend is also not expected to reflect in the future performance. The cash and cash equivalent balance of the company is around $4.67 billion which translates to $8 cash per share. The current ratio is 5.95, indicating a very healthy short-term liquidity position as the industry's average current ratio is around 2.57. The enhanced liquidity position is mainly because of recent convertible debt offerings of $1.5 billion. The debt proceeds are expected to be used to repurchase stock and pay quarterly dividends. The company bought back 62 million shares for $887 million in the fiscal year 2014. The debt transaction in Q4 F2014 points toward further buyback plans. Buybacks are normally indicative of the fact that shares are undervalued, and the management is adjusting its capital structure while the shares are trading low. Nonetheless, the restructuring will help in reducing the cost of capital and will result in a high NPV for the company. As far as OCF is concerned, the company generated $835 million in the fiscal year 2014. FCF was around $580 million for the year. The graph depicts that the company is generating enough cash to support its dividend payments. FCF is also above the dividend yield, indicating that even after fulfilling the CAPEX requirements the company has enough cash to pay dividends. Increments are also expected because dividend yield is lagging behind the cash flow yield. Nvidia can manage to pay yields as high as 4%. However, the current yield of around 1.9% is not very attractive dividend income option. The GPU segment of the company posted a growth in fiscal 2014 thanks to the growth of the consumer oriented high end GeForce and professional Quadro. However, the shrinking PC market capped the growth due to low volume sales of mainstream GPUs. According to JPR research, the total PC graphics and discrete GPU market is expected to show a negative 1.3% CAGR (2013-2017). Based on this it can be assumed that the revenues from consumer PC and gaming graphics are expected to remain flat in the years to come. However, on a positive note Nvidia's market share increased during the current quarter from 16.3% to 16.6%. The market is very competitive because of AMD's discrete and integrated GPU offerings as we have discussed elsewhere. Therefore, it is not possible for either of these two companies to capture substantial market share from each other. Nonetheless, the new Maxwell architecture is going to help Nvidia in gaining some share in the gaming graphics segment. A benchmark reveals that the Maxwell based GTX 750Ti is superior to its counterparts in performance per watts. The TDP of AMD's R9 270 is around 150 watts whereas the GTX 750Ti has a TDP of just 60 watts meaning that no extra connector will be required from the power supply as PCI-e supports up to 75 watts. The card is also priced at $149 as compared to the $180 price tag of R9 270. But then again the R9 270 outperforms GTX 750 Ti in FPS by some margin. Figure 6 Source: extremetech. The graph reveals the better price performance of R9 270 as compared to GTX 750Ti. The full benchmark is available here. We believe that the low power Maxwell is going to hurt AMD in the laptop arena as a 45 watt Maxwell is expected to be featured in that space. However, we believe that there is a pecking order as far as PC graphics are concerned. PC users and gamers rank performance and price over power consumption. Hence, the high price/FPS discrete cards are not expected to capture market share from AMD. The bottom line for Nvidia in the graphics market is that revenues will remain flat or decline, and it is not possible to challenge AMD in discrete graphics but it will gain market share in the shrinking laptop market. In the mobile SOC arena, Nvidia has been facing strong headwinds in the recent past. The company has been unable to gain substantial market share due to the presence of Qualcomm and other players. However, it is rolling out the Tegra K1 SOC this current year. The K1 is an ARM Cortex-A15 based quadcore SOC clocked at 2.3 GHz. The graphics core features 192 CUDA cores based on the Kelper architecture. It is based on 28nm process technology and supports 4K displays. Several benchmarks show K1 to be superior to its counterparts like the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800. However, performance is not the only thing that matters. Mobiles and tablets require low power processing units and, therefore, the higher performance of the K1 is irrelevant until the power consumption figures are revealed. There are rumors that the power consumption of Tegra K1 is 40 watts. This is quite high for a smartphone or tablet and the product can never be successful with such a high amount of power draw. The actual TDP of Tegra K1 will be the defining factor for the performance of Nvidia in the mobile and tablet market in the near future. The K1 is based on the Kelper architecture. The next generation Maxwell based Tegra can be very low power consuming processors and have the potential to change the competitive scenario of the mobile and tablet market. For now, it is not possible to predict the success or failure of the K1 because of limited data, but if its power requirement is comparable to its counterparts, Nvidia will gain market share at their expense. Standard CAPM assumptions. Note that the volatility of this stock is higher than the industry and hence, the cost of capital is high. Growth factor of 9% is assumed for five years. Reuters assumes 3.80% growth in revenues for the coming five years. Tablets are expected to grow at 19%. We used a weighted average because we believe that Maxwell will perform better than the previous architecture. 3% growth is assumed in perpetuity. The price target, with somewhat relaxed growth conditions, reveals that, in the current scenario, the stock is a bit overpriced and if the company's SOC mobile segment does not gain traction in the coming years, it will trade at around $17 supported by the graphics business of the company. The Tegra K1 will be the defining factor for investment decisions regarding this stock. Investors are advised to watch out for TDP news related to Tegra because a competitive TDP will render this price target irrelevant. Until any such developments, we advise investors to avoid NVDA as it is overvalued at these price levels. Note that the company bought back the stock at around $15 which is less than our PT. But as LeBron James unfurled the full breadth of his basketball brilliance one effortless flick of the wrist at a time, the vitriol and invectives offered by fans of the Cleveland Cavaliers slowly began to quiet, replaced by a mix of objective awe and the frantic fervor only a game as good as this one can incite. Sparked by LeBron’s 43 points—25 of which came in an incendiary first frame—the Miami Heat escaped with a narrow 100-96 win Tuesday night. In short, another enrapturing chapter in one of the most unique fanbase-player dynamics in all of sports—one that has only grown more complicated with time. Not surprisingly, the day began with the all-too-predictable speculation over whether the one-time Cleveland cornerstone might make a prodigal return this summer, when James has the choice of opting out of his final year in Miami. I asked LeBron directly if he wants to play for Cleveland again. He wouldn't go there. LeBron, on a possible Cav return, "For me to take my mind somewhere else when I know what's on its way [postseason] is almost impossible. In a way, it’s what LeBron is paid to do in these situations: Deflect and defer as politely as possible. On the other hand, there’s an element of self-preservation—however colored by genuine remorse—at play in James' tact. By leaving open the possibility of coming back to Cleveland, LeBron might spare himself a little extra rage. But then he steps on the floor, and all the memories come flooding back—crystal clear as the day they happened. Of a teenage phenom fate wouldn’t let leave. Of a homegrown hero sent to exorcise a city’s sports demons. Of a once-in-a-generation talent transforming the fortunes of a franchise. Of a shameless traitor who forsook his burden. For every fan that’s let bygones be bygones, there’s one for whom the mere sight of James—every impossible pass, timely shot, effortless board—elicits jaded jealousy. But even then, there was this nagging thought: ‘Well, his announcement did generate $6 million for charities, with $2.5 million going to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. At 29 years old, LeBron’s shot at matching Michael Jordan’s six championship rings—that exacting standard by which everyone from Kobe Bryant to Kevin Durant will be judged—is well within reach. During his All-Star Weekend press conference, James—responding to biting barbs from His Airness regarding LeBron’s legacy—suggested his true mastery of the craft might not be measured in gold alone, saying, “That’s his own opinion. For as many rings as Miami might yield, delivering even one to the people of Cleveland—a city unrivaled in its sporting tribulations—would rewrite the King James Bible for good. For now, both sides must look for signs in the smaller gestures. Like the recent jersey retirement of James’ old friend, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, for which LeBron was conspicuously in attendance—though not among the small contingent of “Cavaliers legends” seated front and center. Still, the event hinted at the slightest of thaws in a place long reserved for frozen feelings. Try as he might to sequester him to suite, Dan Gilbert can’t erase what James meant for the franchise, the city, even Ilgauskas himself. Three months and change away from the start of free agency, no one yet knows where LeBron’s intentions lie. Securing a three-peat with the Heat will almost certainly bolster James’ chances of re-upping, but with the Oklahoma City Thunder and Indiana Pacers taking focused aim, the bull’s eye about Miami’s back has only gotten bigger. One thing’s for certain: If LeBron plays like he did Tuesday night, the Heat—when healthy—are almost impossible to beat. Now when the UN speaks on unacceptable media articles, what does it mean? Salva Kiir's information minister said that to broadcast interviews with rebels into South Sudan would be illegal. A Kiir adviser admitted his government gives "advise" to journalists on what and what not to write -- just as Inner City Press has been told, in connection with UN Accreditation, how to write about Ladsous. This is called censorship. Now Ladsous explicitly joins the censors. Some say it's Ladsous who should be censured -- if, that is, the UN believes in free press. Though it was UN Peacekeeping own admitted "error" that gave rise to articles, Ladsous now blames the government for not agreeing to a joint investigation. He said, "We offered to the Government to conduct a joint investigation, to prove our good faith and provide full transparency. Unfortunately, the offer was declined. Back on March 6, the UN issued a rare admission of error, saying that contrary to policy weapons were moved by road, not air, in South Sudan for the Ghana peacekeepers recently arrived from Cote d'Ivoire. Juba, 6 March 2014: It is the policy of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) that during the crisis in South Sudan all arms and ammunition for peacekeeping contingents are flown into respective areas of deployment and not taken by road. This is an important security measure. In connection with the transport of cargo of general goods belonging to the Ghanaian battalion on its way to Bentiu, several containers were wrongly labelled and inadvertently contained weapons and ammunition. This is regrettable. The Ghanaian troops are part of the surge of UNMISS troops to assist South Sudan and the goods were en route to Bentiu, passing through Rumbek. UN Headquarters intends to dispatch a high level investigation team to look into this matter on an urgent basis, in cooperation with the Government of South Sudan. Pat and Linda Bartley, who work as stall holders at Great Homer Street market Photo by James Maloney Collectively, the traders on Great Homer Street Market are expert with figures. Wander from stall to stall and you can’t avoid them. “It’s ?89 in the shop, I’ll do it for ?25 .... “They’re ?7 each, two for a tenner ... “We’ve got something on this market for every price, from under a pound to ?300 jackets,” says Billy Clayton, pointing in the direction of his rails of branded outdoorwear. “Well, he adds, smiling, “?300’s what they’re worth. I’ll sell you one for ?150 ... But it’s not ticket prices that are weighing on Billy and the other traders’ minds at the moment. There’s another sum concerning them, and they can’t make it add up. “We’ve been told the new market plans have about 150 10ft spaces for us and we have 240 needing to go into it,” explains Tony Chung, who has been selling textiles on the old site for nearly 40 years. “Whichever way you look at it, that just doesn’t fit. Tony, like most who work the market every Saturday from barely sunrise until a 3pm closing up time, is worried that in the brave new glossy world of Dryden Street there simply won’t be enough room for them all. “And we’ve stood here for over 30 years,” says Pat Bartley, who runs a ladieswear stall with wife Lynda. “Between us, Tony and the guy behind us, we’ve had 100 years on this market. “I’m 65 years of age, I don’t want to be moving over there and taking a chance. This is our livelihood, we’re established here, now we just don’t know what’s going to happen to us. To Billy, Tony, Pat and Lynda, Greatie is more than just another place to sell once a week. It’s part of Liverpool’s history, their part, and they don’t want to see it jeopardised. “We’re not being difficult for the sake of it, we want it to be right,” says Tony. “We want this market to be successful, not just for us but the next generation and the one after that. We want it to be something we can be proud of and the city can be proud of. It might not be the prettiest market – “we haven’t had a binbag off anyone, never mind any investment, in all these years,” says Pat – but it is unique and it holds a place in the hearts of generations who have shopped there over the years. The banter and the chat bounce between customers and traders on every stall as the bargains are had. Often they know each other, they know their families, they’re all in the same family. “I’m on my third generation of women coming here,” says Tom Finnegan, clutching a cup of tea in his womenswear unit. “The people who come here are the salt of the earth; women come and then they bring their daughters and then their granddaughters for the younger fashion stuff. Huyton-born Tom has been a fixture on Greatie since 1969, when he started on his first stall. “I was selling chipped cups from Stoke-on-Trent down the bottom end,” he recalls. “I’ve moved all over the market in different stalls. I took mine over from my brother-in-law and now my son-in-law runs one I had. They’re there from 5.30am - 4am some days – ready for the earliest shoppers arriving to get the pick of the stock. Everyone is greeted with a grin and a ‘hiya sweetheart’. “I had Trinny and Susannah here once,” he says. “They were with that young doctor off the telly, making a programme, that’s the gospel truth. 65-year-old Tom joked with them too, because a customer’s a customer in Greaty, whether you’re on the telly or not. “But they’re all more than just customers to me,” he smiles. “I wouldn’t half miss them if I wasn’t here. We’ve been through weddings together, births together, deaths together, everything. We’re all part of the fabric of this market, and this city. We know that and the people who come here know that, but not everyone seems to. They want everything to look nice and pretty, but then you take away the character which is such a big part of this place. It would break my heart if that went. The fight to stay on the street which gave the famous market its name is, they accept, most likely lost for good now. But they still have battles to be waged and points to be made. “One of the biggest problems is the people in charge don’t know what we want, they don’t know anything about markets, and they’ve never once been and asked,” says Tony. Back at his outdoorwear and sportswear stall, Billy has a vision shared by many. “I’ve been on this pitch for 20 years,” he says, “and I think this market should be like Camden in London. That’s on every tourist advertisement, it’s seen as an attraction, a selling point, that’s what we should be. We’ve got cruise ships coming, we’ve got the football, we’ve got big events bringing thousands of people into the city. “What we want is somewhere we can all work and make it a part of the culture of this city in the future. This market is 180 years old, it’s a great place to bring people from outside. People will follow us half a mile down the road, the market is that good, but the new site has to be right. “For 12 years we were at the centre of this development, now we feel as though we’re being pushed aside. Customers share his fears, and his hopes, he says. Pauline Johnson has seen things from both sides; she’s been a Greatie seller and a buyer. She had her first job there, on the old Paddy’s Market when she was 15, selling men’s suits and hats. “I was with a little old lady called Maggie Ireland and the sailors would come over on the ships from Africa and buy suits and leave with 10 hats piled on their heads!” she laughs. “We had three generations on stalls here. My mam got hers from her mother, who had one opposite Cilla Black’s mother. Pauline came every Saturday when her three children where growing up, she says: “Always to the shoe man, who had all the Clarks shoes knotted together at the back. You had to be early because he had nothing left by lunchtime. Now she’s here to spend and chat with traders who know her by name. “They’re like friends to me,” she says, “and I don’t think you find that anywhere else. There’s something special about this market and that’s what we really don’t want to lose. Too often this city doesn’t realise what it’s got until it’s too late.
