A Hennepin County judge awarded Katie Brenny the money, writing Brenny had been subjected to disparate treatment based on her sexual orientation (she is a lesbian) the brief time -- under two months -- she was the U associate head women's golf coach in 2010. The story is here. Rare, indeed. It's been six years since the Gophers got to celebrate a title (Diablo Grande Intercollegiate, March 18, 2008 in Patterson, Calif.). But Tuesday the Gophers won the Entrada Classic, a 16-team tournament in Utah, by eight shots over host BYU with a 931 total. Wisconsin was third 11 shots back and No. 27 California was fourth 12 shots back. Indiana and Iowa finished in the middle of the pack. The Gophers shot a tournament-low 301 in the third round of the 54-hole event. Gopher Anna Laorr tied Alexis Nelson of Wisconsin for lowest score, but was awarded first based on having the low final round. Laorr shot a 6-over 222, and closed with an even-par 72 at Snow Canyon Country Club, her best round as a Gopher. Nelson had a 77 her final round. Teresa Puga was the last Gopher to win a tournament three years ago, the UCF Challenge on Feb. “I’m really proud of the way we competed throughout the tournament especially with the way we battled back to pick up the win today,” Gophers coach Michele Redman said. “The conditions weren’t great with some wind, but we overcame that. We’ve kept working hard all season, and we’re starting to see that pay off now. The whole team has supported each other and pushed each other, and that’s great to see as a coach. “I couldn’t be happier for Anna,” Redman said. “She played well for us, made smart decisions, and it’s great to see her pick up her first win. Laorr, a junior from Eden Prairie, Minn., finished fifth at the tournament last year with an eight-over 222. (Must have made a few course changes.) Last summer Laorr won the Minnesota Women's Golf Association Match Play Championship on August 1. “I was pretty excited [Tuesday] to be honest, this is my favorite course,” Laorr said. “For about five months, I’ve been trying not to put too much pressure on myself for this tournament. The course played very different than last year, but we played well as a team, and it’s great to be able to celebrate a win together. Teammate Carmen Laguna finished tied for 14th (236) while Emie Peronnin tied for 20th (239). The women's team has been showing signs something like this was coming. It has had three of the top five rounds in program history before this tournament. The Gophers shot a 4-under 284 on Feb. 18 of the Central Invitational in Sarosota, Fla., to finish with an 875 total, the third best 54-hole tournament score ever. Earlier at the University of Central Florida Classic, the team had rounds of 295, 287 and 287 for an 869 total to finish fifth in that event. The 284 and two 287s are among Minnesota's top-five low rounds. The U of M men's golf team is off to a great start as well. It won the Del Walker Intercollegiate Golf Classic in Long Beach, Calif., on March 3-4. Jon Trasmar took fourth place as an individual, teammate Alex Gaugert tied for fifth. It was the second win of the 2013-14 season for the men, a feat they last accomplished in 2006-07 when they tied for first at both the U.S. Intercollegiate and the Big Ten Championship. The Gophers had rounds of 280, 276 and 280 for a 4-under 836 total. That was good enough to beat Arizona and California-Santa Barbara by one stroke. Host Long Beach State was two back. Trasamar finished 4-under with rounds of 66, 70 and 70. During his last round, he had a double bogey on the 10th but recovered with an eagle on the par-5 12th. Gaugert shot a 69 in each round of the tournament to finish one stroke behind Trasamar at 3-under. Trasamer's fourth-place was his second top-10 finish of the season, Gaugert's fifth was his third top 10. Jose Mendez tied for 12th, shooting a 69 in the final round. Jon DuToit tied for 30th at 4 over. The Gophers won their first tournament since that 2006-07 season last fall on Oct. 21. They took first in the 14-team Barnabas Health Intercollegiate in Bedminster, N.J., by 17 shots. There were 14 teams in the field. Trasamar was second there with rounds of 72 and 66 for a 6-under 138. Guagert took fourth with a 1-under 143. One other men's highlight this season came on Feb. 15 when they took fifth in the Big Ten Match Play Championships in Bradenton, Fla. The Gophers beat top seed Illinois 3-2 in their second-to-last match. Joburg is a city of economic opportunity for people from all over the country and the continent. Due to this growth, there is continually a push on resources and a need for the city to think of innovative ways of addressing the city's challenges. Some of these challenges include a lack of affordable rental housing in the city for residents earning less than 3,200 rand (?179) per month, who make up half of the city's population. Another huge challenge is mistrust of public space: wealthy Joburgers tend to isolate themselves behind high walls, which isn't great for social cohesion. Ponte is one of the most recognisable features of the Joburg cityscape. Built around a 55-floor inner core in the 1970s as an exclusive high-rise condominium, it fell prey to urban degeneration and symbolised everything negative you have heard about the city. Recently, through various community and resident-based initiatives of organisations such as Dlala Nje, the building has been transformed into a safer, cleaner and friendlier environment to live in, thereby restoring this iconic building to its former glory. Monte Casino is a sprawling casino complex in the north. It represents the suburban sprawl that characterises much of Johannesburg. Although it adds an element of fun to the city (such as the hosting of big-budget Broadway musicals), it discourages the use of the public realm by literally transporting us to another world (the entire complex has recreated a faux Tuscany) where all we do is consume. This is a student suburb in the inner city that is slowly being regenerated through the injection of private wealth. The result is a public environment that is safe and pleasant to use, for all. Other initiatives, such as the Wits Art Museum, mean the area has become a cultural hub for the city's creative class. Step into any coffee shop and listen to how people are embracing Joburg.? Braamfontein represents a new blending of regenerated urban grit and everyday Joburg experiences. It is this mix that seems authentically Joburg. There are many areas in Joburg that are problematic, but to hate a particular place or area ignores the nuances behind it and closes you off to elements that can make you love the city. All of Joburg makes up Joburg. These are informal, private minibus vans that are usually stuffed to the brim with passengers and follow semi-permanent routes in and out of the city. Due to the partial absence of formal public transport, taxis have become integral to Joburg's social fabric. The interiors are usually lively space – with kwaito or upbeat gospel music pumping from the radio – and the drivers are … unrestrained. Although there are various problems with this mode of transport, there is no faster and fun way to get around the city. Joburg has a fantastic array of coffee shops and restaurants, and best of all, they're afforable compared with many other cities. If we were to pick a favourite, we would go for Burhan's Butchery in Mayfair. It's exactly that – a butchery – but it also doubles up as restaurant offering fantastic Turkish street food. And its baklava is to die for. You bet! This is a city where space is contested, debated, abused, haggled over, stretched out and turned upside down by an active citizenry. This city-making is never particularly sanitised – in fact, it is often downright dirty. But it generally strives to take place within the framework of the South African constitution and in a manner that seeks the fulfilment of citizens' rights to dignity, equality and freedom. Only 58 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds think fur is wrong, compared to 77 per cent of those over 55. Lily Allen recently appeared in a green fox fur coat at the NME awards and the only controversy it caused was its resemblance to Sulley from Monsters, Inc. Sulley and the fox wore it better. The coat was delivered to Lily from the furriers on request. Why a fashionable young millionairess lacks the stylist and the imagination to seek out a less gruesome garment is baffling. Anyone who can afford the luxury of fur has the means to find just as lavish an alternative (Inuits excepted). This month, Finland will host the world’s biggest fur trade sale and the 14million pelts up for grabs are expected to yield the market’s best result to date. I come from a generation that was bombarded with the anti-fur propaganda of the 80s and 90s, when supermodels like Naomi Campbell would rather go naked than wear it. Fur is a staple on the catwalks and young designers have embraced it with no trace of conscience. What schoolchildren should see is the film The Fur Industry In 60 Seconds Flat, from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). Animals are electrocuted, suffocated, gassed and poisoned for their fur. They are beaten, stood on, hung from the back legs and skinned alive. The screams and the squeals of agony as their skin is ripped off their backs are gut-wrenching. Their bloody bodies are then tossed into a pile and the animals writhe in pain, sometimes living on for an excruciating 10 minutes. The resurgence of the fur trade reflects poorly on a swathe of women – many young – who are willing to put vanity before humanity. Fashion is not just about the clothes we put on our backs, the cars we drive, the colours we paint our walls – it is also about the way we think. Nightlife / Music / Movies / TV / Dining / Arts / omaha. Arthur Kopit The playwright worked with Maury Yeston on “Phantom — the Musical,” which Creighton is staging. Ryan Malone and Chelsey Hill star as the Phantom and Christine in Creighton University’s spring show, “Phantom — The Musical. When: Thursday through March 30. Showtimes: 7:30 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays, 2 p.m. March 30 only. Information: 402-280-1448 or creighton. No, it’s not the “Phantom” musical everybody knows. That’s Andrew Lloyd Webber’s version. But “Phantom — the Musical,” with a book by Arthur Kopit and music by Maury Yeston, has had more than 1,000 productions in regional and community theater. It adds one more starting Thursday, when Creighton University Theatre opens it for a two-weekend run. Kopit calls “Phantom” the most popular musical never to play Broadway. And he’s coming to Omaha to see Creighton’s take on his and Yeston’s show. He listed two main reasons for its popularity, even as the lesser-­known of two musicals based on Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel, “The Phantom of the Opera. “It’s a great underlying story, a ‘Beauty and the Beast’ story,” Kopit said by phone last week from his apartment on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. “And I think we did a good job writing it. A third reason, he said, is that most musical productions are modeled after the way it was done on Broadway. Since this show has no Broadway history, directors and venues feel more freedom in how they choose to stage it. “Webber’s version requires a lot of equipment and technical resources,” he said. “Ours can be done quite simply, and it moves audiences. Plus audiences are curious about it because so many have seen the other. “Phantom of the Opera” has proved a popular vehicle for adaptation. Nonmusical movies starred Lon Chaney (1925) and Claude Rains (1943). A 2004 movie with Lloyd Webber’s music and Charles Hart’s lyrics starred Gerard Butler. Stephen Sheftz, Creighton’s director of musical theater, said he knew he had vocal students with the skills to do Yeston’s operetta-style score justice. Director Alan Klem, meanwhile, was hooked by Kopit’s script. “It follows the novel more closely,” Klem said. “And Kopit is never predictable. He makes interesting choices in a direction you’re not expecting. He can make a fast turn from light and gay to the darkest corners of the universe. I like that. Kopit and Yeston had most of the show written in 1986 when Lloyd Webber announced his Broadway version. Financial backing disappeared, and they shelved it. Then Kopit penned a network-­television miniseries of “Phantom,” using his and Yeston’s approach to the material but without music. They shot it at the Paris Opera House. It was a hit, which led to their musical version finally being staged at Houston’s Texas Theater Under the Stars in 1991. It then played in Seattle, San Bernardino and Chicago, garnering strong reviews from Variety and the Wall Street Journal. Kopit remembers his reaction when he finally saw Lloyd Webber’s show in the early 1990s: “I thought ours was better. But I’m not at all surprised his was a hit. It’s effective. In Kopit’s view, his and Yeston’s version provides more backstory and explains why the phantom is drawn to Christine, how he came to be who he is, and how that connects to his love for Christine. “It’s the humanizing of the story, making it more character-driven. Kopit met Yeston when Tommy Tune asked him to rewrite the book for the musical “Nine,” based on Fellini’s movie “8?.” Yeston wrote the score. The show was a hit, and they then partnered on “Phantom. Musicals are a world away from Kopit’s playwriting roots. He’s a two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist for dramatic plays “Indians” in 1969 and “Wings” in 1978, and he was first noted for a sendup of absurdist theater, “Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mamma’s Hung You in the Closet and I’m Feelin’ So Sad. “Musicals are closer to film than plays in some ways,” he said. “They’re a collaboration, particularly on the visual aspect and how you tell the story. A play moves like the peeling of an onion, and you get to the climax toward the end. Musicals start with a premise. The character wants something, and how does he get it? In a musical, the major scenes are sung. The book writer takes a back seat. He declined to state a preference for writing dramas or musicals. “I’m a playwright,” Kopit said. “I’m drawn to material I care about. Kopit will attend an opening-night public reception in Creighton’s theater lobby today from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. A fundraising dinner with Kopit as special guest Friday will be at Lucille’s in the Old Market. Reservations are closed for that event. Klem said Creighton’s version of “Phantom” features a large cast, a nearly 30-piece orchestra, scenic and lighting design by Bill Van Deest, choreography by Patrick Roddy and costumes by Lindsay Pape. “Everybody’s pretty maxed out,” Klem said. “The pieces are there. And that bell you hear ringing is the signal for the next round in the fight the Calgary pipeline company will have with environmentalists who oppose fossil-fuel pipelines on safety and environmental grounds. The proposed Energy East Pipeline project would convert about 3,000 kilometres of TransCanada's underutilized mainline natural gas pipeline to crude-oil service and build about 1,400 kilometres of new pipeline in Alberta, Quebec and New Brunswick. The company filed a 140-page project description with the National Energy Board earlier this month and intends to file a formal application sometime this summer. —TransCanada spokesman Phillipe CannonTransCanada already conducted some public consultations after it formally announced the project last August and intends to continue holding extensive public meetings as the project application moves ahead. TransCanada spokesman Phillipe Cannon said the company's mainline is a series of pipelines running alongside each other. The process of converting some underutilized capacity of the mainline from gas service to oil service requires building pumping stations along the route, including about seven in Manitoba, according to the preliminary maps of the route. Cannon could not say how much excavation might be required along the way. The company's stated rationale for the new pipeline, which would be the longest oil pipeline in North America, is to establish greater energy security in Eastern Canada. TransCanada's controversial proposed Keystone XL pipeline into the U.S. would be 1,897 kilometres long. Cannon said TransCanada has contracts in place with three eastern Canadian refineries for 900,000 barrels a day. "Refineries value having a diversity of supply and typically acquire products they need from more than one source and pipeline," Cannon said. "The gas that people put in their cars in Quebec and Eastern Canada comes from Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Libya. In Canada, we are sitting on the third-largest reserve of oil in the world and we are not using it out east. But environmental and public-interest groups who oppose the pipeline said in a seven-page report that came out Tuesday, called An Export Pipeline, NOT for Domestic Gain, those refineries are already fully supplied. They say the oil that would be moved via the proposed Energy East Pipeline would be shipped unrefined to places such as India, Europe and possibly the United States. Andrea Harden-Donahue, an energy and climate activist with the Council of Canadians, one of the authors of the report, said, "TransCanada has not provided its own numbers to dispute our findings. How much do they expect to export? That is a question they should answer. We don't feel it is acceptable that they should be vague when these are questions of social interest. If they want social licence to move forward with this project, we need actual numbers. But Cannon said TransCanada already has strong stakeholder and public support as well as strong market demand from two Quebec refineries and one in New Brunswick. "Energy East will tie directly into those three refineries," Cannon said. "It is surprising to read that they (the Council of Canadians and other authors of the report) say it will be exported as crude. The massive project would move crude oil from the Alberta oilsands and from the Bakken Basin in Saskatchewan and Manitoba to refineries, further establishing the infrastructure to support the multibillion-dollar oil-production industry in Canada. Harden-Donahue said despite the fact much of the pipeline is already in place, it is of much greater concern for those near it that it will move oil -- particularly hazardous diluted bitumen from the Alberta oilsands -- rather than the compressed natural gas for which it was originally built. TransCanada open houses will continue in Brandon on Wednesday, Moosamin, Sask., on Thursday and then Dryden and Nipigon, Ont., and Regina next week. martin.cash@freepress.mb. The rumours first surfaced four years ago, with models coming forward with graphic accounts of the abuse they allegedly suffered at his hands. One anonymous model revealed, ‘If you talk about him openly, you never work again’, and another claimed she had a Skype conversation with him where he called her ‘brainless’ for saying she won’t sleep with him to get work. The much-feted photographer finally broke his silence on Friday in a letter posted on the Huffington Post entitled ‘Correcting the Rumours’. While not denying sexual activity had taken place, he insisted it was all consensual. And explaining why he’d waited four years to respond, he wrote, ‘At that time, I felt that to dignify them with a response was a betrayal of my work and my character. When these allegations resurfaced over the past few months, they seemed especially vicious and distorted, moving outside the realm of critical dialogue and becoming nothing more than an emotionally-charged witch hunt. The allegations are just the latest in a string of claims that Richardson has made sexual advances to young models. Rie Rasmussen, a Danish model, confronted Richardson at a Paris event and accused him of exploiting young models in vulnerable positions. She told the New York Post, ‘He takes girls who are young, manipulates them to take their clothes off and takes pictures of them they will be ashamed of. They are too afraid to say no because their agency booked them on the job and are too young to stand up for themselves. Hard Working Americans are a cover band fronted by idiosyncratic singer-songwriter Todd Snider and a group of musicians recruited from the rootsier side of the jam band scene. Guitarist Neal Casal has played with the Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Dave Schools is the bassist of Widespread Panic, Chad Staehly plays keyboards in Great American Taxi, and Duane Trucks is the drumming nephew of Allman Brothers’ drummer Butch. Snider being Snider, he’s chosen an unusual set of mostly lesser-known country and roots-rock songs for his band to cover. It also comes as no surprise that Snider and his handpicked band pretty much play the hell out of these songs. On the other hand, Snider is a limited vocalist, so with him in the lead, everything the Hard Working Americans play sort of flattens out. The effect is one of a bar band with very good taste playing songs that they love but that their singer sometimes can’t really pull off. Opener “Blackland Farmer” is a radically darker version of a classic country song by Frankie Miller from 1959. Snider’s laconic delivery blends really well with Casal’s sliding blues guitar and Staehly’s funky organ. It’s a hell of an opener that leads nicely into an upbeat, hard rocking take on Will Kimbrough’s “Another Train”. Snider’s pleas to his woman to miss the train and stay the night are totally believable, although Casal’s showy guitar solo is a little much here. It’s when the band slows things down that the Hard Working Americans start to run into problems. “Down to the Well” is mostly a straight cover of a song by Kevin Gordon, and there’s a palpable lack of energy to the song. Snider’s vocal issues become more apparent on Drivin’ and Cryin’s “Straight to Hell”, where he attempts to sing in what sounds like his softest possible voice for the bulk of the song. It sounds very forced and makes the whole track difficult to listen to. Sure, he eventually starts belting it out near the end of the song, but instead of a big climax it ends up feeling like too little too late. Kimbrough and Tommy Womack’s “I Don’t Have a Gun” features a similarly soft vocal but fares a bit better due, once again, to the keyboards and guitar playing. It also helps that the song is meant to be a drunken rant instead of a woe-is-me lament. The slow, acoustic treatment probably works best on the album’s closer, Gillian Welch’s “Wrecking Ball”. Welch’s lyrics are evocative and specific, and Snider clearly loves the song and manages to do it justice. The rest of Hard Working Americans is similarly hit and miss, and it usually comes down to Snider’s delivery and his song choices. Recasting the Gibson Brothers’ bluegrass tune “Mountain Song” into a Grateful Dead-style country-rock song works, especially when Casal tosses off a note-perfect jam band guitar solo that could’ve come from anyone from Jerry Garcia to Phish’s Trey Anastasio to the guys from Moe. Hayes Carll’s “Stomp and Holler”, on the other hand, clearly finds the band having a blast playing it but Snider comes off as insincere singing Carll’s lyrics. This is particularly noticeable when he leans too hard on the song’s punchline, “I’m like James Brown only white and taller / All I wanna do is stomp and holler,” and saps it of most of its humor. The Bottle Rockets’ “Welfare Music” finds the band invested and playing with energy, but the early ‘90s song feels dated and the lyrics faintly ridiculous in 2014. Randy Newman’s “Mr. President (Have Pity on the Working Man)” demonstrates exactly how difficult it is to pull off Newman’s simultaneously sardonic and sympathetic vocal delivery. BR549’s “Run a Mile” falls squarely on the “hit” side of the ledger, though, as the band digs into the song’s bluesy groove and the mid-song hard rock breakdown gives the band one of its few chances to really rock out. And the vocal delivery falls right into Snider’s wheelhouse, which of course helps a lot. Hard Working Americans is obviously a labor of love for Snider. It gives him a chance to loosen up and play a bunch of songs he really likes, and if it doesn’t work for listeners on every single track he probably doesn’t care all that much. But that doesn’t mean we can’t call him out for song choices that don’t quite work, and there are definitely some songs here on which Snider probably shouldn’t be singing lead vocals. Nevertheless, the album is an interesting collection of songs that effectively sheds a little light on some great songs from artists that often don’t get enough credit. Margaret River winemakers are to hold an emergency meeting in response to threatened legal action against Flametree Wines by LVMH-owned Cape Mentelle over use of the Wallcliffe name on wine labels. Several winemakers in the Western Australian region are concerned about the impacts of potential legal action. Wallcliffe has been mapped as a sub-region in Margaret River, but is not yet legally recognised as such. Cape Mentelle, which is owned by French billionaire Bernard Arnault's LVMH group, has a trademark application pending on Wallcliffe as a standalone name, and its lawyers have asked Flametree Wines to stop using the term. Flametree general manager Cliff Royle said Dr John Gladstones’ sub-regional map of Margaret River, completed in 1999, gave local producers a precedent to use Wallcliffe on its labels when referring to the source of the fruit for its wines. 'We have identified the sub-regional origin of our fruit and have not intended to infringe on what Cape Mentelle considers is its intellectual property. Cape Mentelle believes that Wallcliffe is a brand, but it is a geographical place and a name that has been in general use since the 1800s. But, Cape Mentelle general manager Rob Mann said that further definition of boundaries and sub-regional titles is required. 'We have no agreed boundaries, names or registered Geographical Indicators for sub-regions within Margaret River and any reference to them is not formally recognised or controlled. In 1999, Cape Mentelle successfully trademarked Wallcliffe Winery, Wallcliffe Vineyard and Wallcliffe Estate. 'A couple of wineries have used the term Wallcliffe prominently on the front label of their wines and this is what we object to as infringing on our established brand and trademark.
