Junior first baseman Cole Lankford hit a walk-off double in the 11th inning Tuesday to seal the A&M win, 8-7.A late-inning push led to the third walk-off win of the season for the No. 23 Texas A&M baseball team as it beat the Columbia Lions 8-7 before a Tuesday night crowd of 3,526 at Blue Bell Park at Olsen Field. With one out in the 11th inning, junior first baseman Cole Lankford hit a double to the gap in right-center that drove in Blake Allemand for the game-winning run. “I told our team I’m very, very proud of them,” said head coach Rob Childress. “There have been a lot of moments that have made me proud so far this year, but tonight’s by far and away the most. Allemand, who scored from first base after a one out single, ran through the stop sign of third base coach Andy Sawyer on his way to the plate. “I didn’t even know he gave me a stop sign until after I got up from scoring,” Allemand said. “I’m not going to lie to you, the ball landed as I got to second base and I said, ‘I’m scoring regardless.’ Luckily it worked out, otherwise it would have been a bonehead play. Banks crushed a triple that hit just under the 400 sign in center field to drive in senior catcher Troy Stein — who had reached on a single — in the bottom half of the sixth. Senior center fielder Jace Statum walked and then advanced to second on a Patrick McLendon single. As junior third baseman Blake Allemand attempted to lay down a sacrifice bunt, Statum was thrown out at second after getting too big of a lead. Junior first baseman Cole Lankford salvaged the seventh inning for the Aggies when he laced an RBI double inside the first base bag scoring McLendon, making the score 5-4. Lankford’s 15 runs batted in are second on the team behind junior Logan Nottebrok’s 16. The Lions put up two runs in the top of eighth to make the score 7-4. Stein and sophomore left fielder Jonathan Moroney struck out to start the Aggie eighth — putting A&M four outs away from a loss. Banks, who finished the night a home run shy of the cycle, popped a ball into left field and legged out a double. Taylor drew a walk to bring the tying run to the plate in junior Mitchell Nau — who was pinch hitting for Statum. Nau sent a 3-1 pitch over the fence to tie the game at seven, bringing the dwindling home crowd to their feet. “I just got thrown into that situation,” Nau said. “That was my duty. I was going to come in against a lefty that they threw. It’s a one-on-one battle every time you go up to the plate for me — that’s how I look at it. I won today. Entertainment03.19. The actress-activist discusses her latest film ‘Cesar Chavez’ and how she navigated the treacherous, sexist, and oft-racist terrain of Hollywood. Rosario Dawson is, in many ways, an anomaly. One day, filmmaker Larry Clark and screenwriter Harmony Korine spotted her on her front stoop in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, and asked her to audition for a role in their movie. It was the cultural touchstone Kids, and at 15, Dawson, a young woman of Puerto Rican and Afro-Cuban descent raised in an abandoned building squat, was granted entree into Hollywood. Over the years, she’s managed to become one of the most formidable Latina actors in the biz, someone who, in an industry that loves to pigeonhole actors of color, has convincingly played everything from a government agent (Eagle Eye) to a femme fatale (Trance). In filmmaker Diego Luna’s Cesar Chavez, in theaters March 28, she plays Dolores Huerta, a fervent activist who helps Chavez (Michael Pena) form the United Farm Workers, the labor union that aimed to provide better wages and working conditions for the exploited braceros—immigrants from Mexico permitted to live and work in the U.S. in agriculture, under conditions similar to indentured servitude. Through nonviolent protest, Chavez and his confederates made history. Barack Obama even adopted an English version of Chavez’s slogan, “iSi, se puede!”—“Yes, we can!”—for his senate and presidential runs. Dawson sat down with The Daily Beast in her native New York for a discussion about the film, the city she loves, and her rise to stardom. Cesar Chavez touches on a lot of issues that are still pertinent today, like labor unions, nonviolent protest, etc. I’m excited to be a part of celebrating a moment in history that people don’t know much about. I’d tell people I was doing a movie about Chavez and they’d say: Hugo? The boxer? Come on, people. And I’d tell them I was playing Dolores Huerta and they’d stare at me blankly. She won the Medal of Freedom! This is not OK. This was the farmworkers’ unionized movement—marginalized people coming together, many of them illiterate, and making a noise loud enough that resounded around the world. The fact that these boulevards and streets that are named after Chavez don’t mean things to people is shameful, and evidence of how our education system’s failed us. This was a movement that went “viral” before we used the word viral. There’s a reality where you walk into a meeting with a producer and they go, “Oh, you’re so articulate!” And you go, “Why do you sound so surprised?”The farmworkers, as we see in the film, were beaten back quite a bit by a white-dominated system, but eventually triumphed. They suffered many more failures than they had successes, and it’s proof positive today when it comes to our broken immigration system, and how volatile the conversation has become. Young millennials are the first group that, as diverse as they are, really wants traction on a lot of these different issues. It opens us up to a way of thinking, “Yes, it’s in your power to do something about this. Yes, you’re inheriting trillions of dollars of debt, you’re drowning in student loans, you’re living with your parents, you’re worried about your future, you’re marrying less and putting off children. You’re a very interesting demographic. But two-thirds of you approve of gay marriage, you’re in favor of medical marijuana.” So you can watch this movie and go, “OK, that group of illiterate farmworkers banded together and changed the world. I’m a young person that feels very marginalized—people only treat me like a consumer—but I can change the world. You mentioned immigration, and it’s interesting because Chavez was actually anti-immigration. In some ways, but he had a lot of undocumented people in the union. He didn’t like “poachers”—people who came in and took jobs, or union-busters—but if you were part of the union, you were good. I wonder what his stance would be today, because he’s been gone for 20 years, and the anti-immigration movement has gotten crazy. I think we have a lot of people who are working here who have risked their lives to even come here, fleeing from places where our foreign policy is sketchy in, so a big reason why their homes aren’t safe places to work and foster and raise their own children is because of our immigration policies and our foreign policy. We’re very involved with the population that works here—not just because we benefit from the fact that they’re suffering indentured servitude, but that these are people who are working under social security numbers that aren’t their own, so they’re paying into a system that they can’t take out of. But they’re making sure that we have the most accessible, inexpensive food on the planet, and do all the jobs that people don’t want to do. Illegal immigrants do seem to endure great hardships just to live in America. Right. I’ll do that hard labor so I can get a little money to provide for my family and see if I can achieve the American Dream. These are people who are putting their lives at stake for the American Dream. These are people who love to be here. That’s the big fallacy in a lot of the conversation when it comes to illegal immigrants. They don’t want to be here! They’re just taking our jobs! No. These are people who believe in the American Dream probably even more than you do, and they value being in America in a way that you can’t really appreciate. I’m a humanist. I think it’s weird and interesting that we have divisive lines that say, “This is a different state, or city, or country.” We’re all humans. And when you say, “You don’t mean anything to me because you grew up on the other side of the invisible line,” well then we’ve got a real problem. In the early portions of Cesar Chavez, the farmers suffer a great deal of racism at the hands of the white farmers. They’re beaten, called names. Absolutely. Classism: I grew up in a squat on the Lower East Side. Sexism: when you have one-in-three women that’s going to be raped, killed, or beaten in their lifetime, there’s a reality that’s there about how people will treat you, talk to you, and have expectations of you. Ageism. Racism, absolutely. There’s a reality where you walk into a meeting with a producer and they go, “Oh, you’re so articulate!” And you go, “Why do you sound so surprised?” It’s so patronizing and ridiculous. And, as a matter of fact, it’s not because I grew up in a middle-class home and went to college. I grew up on the Lower East Side—before it was gentrified—and I have a high school diploma. Even the way that you want to accredit how I speak, it’s because my mom, who has a GED, raised me that way. And my grandmother, who’s my hero—she passed five years ago and was a secretary, and talk about being marginalized! She doesn’t rate on most people’s radars, but she was the world to me and helped me become the person I am today. It’s a fascinating and telling thing about a person, the value systems that we filter people through. It’s so narrow, and lazy, and it’s like Mandela says: people are taught to hate, you’re not born that way. So it puts pressure on all of us to continue to look at the next generation and pass on our activism. The racial bias in Hollywood that you mentioned is interesting. It seems like early on in your career, you were being pigeonholed a bit in roles—playing the girl from the block—but you managed to transcend that later on, and it was great to see you play a suit in Eagle Eye and Unstoppable. I think it provides a great model for other aspiring Latino actors. I think I’ve been really lucky because I was discovered into acting. Kids was an amazing experience. I worked four days on it and it got me an agent and manager and changed my life. Spike [Lee] saw it and invited me to audition for He Got Game, and I was able to continue to get roles and keep pushing myself. Because that’s how I got started, I didn’t have this idea of a “career path” or “goals,” so I just wouldn’t take certain roles. I have very diverse tastes and interests, so I’d want to do a part in Rob Zombie’s movie, or a kids movie, or an action movie, or an indie movie with a first-time filmmaker. I’ve done over 50 films and they’re all over the place, but it’s been fun. I’m really lucky that I started in the independent film era. I think that helped create a lot of opportunities for me, and access points to perform in things that people would have seen. It’s been, I think, really remarkable. I’ve somehow navigated my way through the maze of the ageism, racism, sexism, and all the walls and blocks that exist there, because they do, and they exist for a reason. People like to tell their own stories and there’s a very specific demographic in Hollywood that gets to make those choices, but there are more and more voices that are coming into the fold that are getting more powerful, and the audience is changing, which is giving us an opportunity. It’s not that I haven’t seen that stuff come up, but it hasn’t deterred me. I haven’t seen it in a while! I saw a clip of it, and it’s really interesting. There are no cell phones in it—we’re at a payphone in one scene, which kind of dates it—but it’s a portrait of a New York that doesn’t really exist anymore. Because there are no cellphones in it, it actually holds up better than some other films. My friend and me were talking the other day about You’ve Got Mail, and how it doesn’t hold up as well because it’s tied to a very specific time. But Kids is still so pertinent, and still resonates. I still know people who are going, “I just showed that movie to my son and it scared him out of his mind!” I feel really lucky that that was my start, and that we got to immortalize a New York that doesn’t exist anymore. Right. I grew up on the Upper West Side when it wasn’t nearly as nice as it is today. And you’re from the Lower East Side, which has changed even more. It’s getting very expensive to live in New York, and very hard for people to live here. Spike spoke about how gentrified it’s become, and how “white-centric” it’s become—I don’t know exactly what he said—but it’s interesting because when I come back into the city, I’m like, “Why is there a building in what used to be a lot, or a park?” “They tore a church down for housing?” With the gentrification, I find myself sounding like some ornery old New Yorker going, “When I was young…” But it’s a transient city. That “Tale of Two Cities” has always existed in New York, and there have been times where it’s leaned one way more than the other. When I was growing up in a squat on the Lower East Side, that was a very low point for New York money-wise, and even then, it was still a city that a lot of people wanted to visit. It’s an interesting thing that people come here and say “I’m a New Yorker” because they rode the subway for the first time. That’s not something you get anywhere else. People don’t move to Paris and call themselves “Parisians.” I’ve lived in L.A. for nine years and I don’t call myself a “Californian.” It’s a very specific thing that New York has. I think with De Blasio coming in, it bodes very differently for the city. NYCHA housing pays an extra $750,000 a year to have police care, which is ironic because they don’t have any police security and are often complaining about violence in the communities. This is also a community whose elevators are falling apart. All the mayors in the race went and stayed in the projects and balked at the rats and the black-and-green mold, and all this is happening in the same city where all these new big glass buildings are going up every day. The divide between these two things is getting wider and wider every day, and that’s a big problem. And what do we lose as we try to keep up with the Joneses? What about our culture? I loved having the trains have graffiti on them. I dug that. That was the moment in time when hip-hop was created, and so much was created. It’s so sanitized now. I’m walking around the Lower East Side and they’re bringing in 7-11’s, and it’s corrupting the very thing that made them want to move into that neighborhood. Our office is in the Meatpacking District, which has changed A LOT. Who would have thought the Meatpacking District would transform into what it did! Trio charged with murder of Umno branch chief KOTA TINGGI: Three unemployed men were charged in a magistrate’s court here with the murder of Felda Semenchu Wanita Umno branch chief Zalifah Jamaluddin. COLLEGE STATION –The Texas wheat crop remains below average, and very little cotton has been planted, according to a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service agronomist. Dry weather is the culprit for the poor wheat crop, while lower-than-normal soil temperatures have been the primary reason for the delay in the planting of spring crops, said Dr. Travis Miller, AgriLife Extension agronomist and Texas A&M University soil and crop sciences associate department head, College Station. “Much of South Texas corn and sorghum crops are planted, while cool weather and wet soils on the coast delayed planting,” Miller said. “Much of the dryland wheat crop in the High Plains and Rolling Plains remains in very poor shape, with 87 percent of the crop rated from fair to very poor conditions. However, the irrigated crop is in relatively good shape. In my opinion, it (dryland wheat) will be a below-average crop because of dry weather. It’s unusually cold weather that has slowed the planting of spring crops, he said. http://today.agrilife.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/0318-crop-weather-AUDIO. “The state climatologist says Texas averaged three degrees colder over the last couple months than normal,” he said. “I don’t know if that will equate to any difference in yields, but we could have some stand problems associated with the cold weather. Miller said that though drought conditions have improved somewhat –particularly in the Coastal Bend and South Texas — drought continues for a fourth year in the Panhandle, South Plains, Rolling Plains and parts of Central Texas. “Meanwhile, there is some hope on the horizon in the form of the possible development of an El Nino climatic pattern this year,” he said. “Current models are showing a chance of this development by midsummer. A strong El Nino typically causes wetter and cooler conditions in Texas. “Right now, they’re giving about a 50 percent chance for an El Nino, which is a little better than a coin toss,” he said. Low soil temperatures were still delaying spring planting throughout much of Texas by mid-March. Central: Most counties reported adequate soil moisture. Rangeland and pasture were mostly rated fair. Crops were in fair to good condition across the region. Some oats and wheat suffered significant leaf burn from the freeze that occurred the previous week. From 0.5 inch to 1.29 inches of rain fell over the weekend. Trees and ornamental plants were blooming in some areas. Producers were planti ng into dry seedbeds, hoping for more rain. Spotty germination was expected as moisture varied across some fields. Sorghum producers were planting shallow and also hoping for a good rain. Cattle continued to look good as producers continued providing supplemental feed and hay as winter grass production fell off. Coastal Bend: Light rains left fields slightly muddy. In the northern part of the reporting area, many corn farmers had still not planted due to low soil temperatures. In the southern part of the region, most corn and grain sorghum fields were planted, with some already emerged. Also in the southern counties, most producers were ready to plant cotton, but had muddy fields to contend with. Wheat was beginning to head and appeared to be in fair to good condition. Growers were fertilizing pastures between rains. There was limited forage growth, but rapid improvement was expected for both grasses and cattle as weather warmed. East: A warming trend allowed winter pastures to recuperate. Most counties reported rain, which improved topsoil and subsoil moisture. Low-lying fields had surplus soil moisture. Some counties reported decreased hay consumption thanks to improved winter forages. Hay supplies across the region were short, and some producers were forced to buy out of county. Cattle were in good shape. Spring calving continued. Vegetable planting increased. Fruit growers continued to evaluate damage from last week’s freeze. Some later peach varieties were starting to bloom. Feral hogs were becoming more active. Far West: Warm, windy days and cool nights were the norm for the week, with from a trace to 0.45 inch of rain received. The vacillating temperatures through the winter have had a profound drying impact on both vegetation and soils. Fall-planted onions were at the five-leaf stage with good rooting. Alfalfa was free of pests and looked good. Pecan growers were irrigating orchards though trees were still dormant with no bud break. Cotton growers were irrigating fields. Chile growers were preparing seedbeds. Wheat producers continued irrigating. Most cattle herds were in the middle of spring calving season. North: The region received from 1 inch to 2 inches of rain. However, windy conditions continued to dry out any excess moisture, and topsoil moisture ranged from very short to adequate. Temperatures warmed a little until another cold front pushed through during the middle of the week, but lows stayed above freezing. At times during the past few weeks, wheat was coming out of dormancy and starting to grow again, but the periods of cold weather slowed down growth. Collin County reported wheat appeared about a month behind schedule. Delta County reported that wheat tops were brown. Winter pastures were also in a similar state across the region. Kaufman County livestock producers were still providing heavy supplemental feed. Land preparation for spring corn planting continued. If conditions held, farmers in some counties were hoping to be able to plant corn soon. Collin County had already planted 10 percent of their corn, w hile Hun t County had most of the intended corn acres planted and planned to start soybean planting soon. Livestock looked good across the counties. Feral hogs were still causing damage in Camp County. Panhandle: For another week, temperatures varied widely. Spring winds of 40 to 70 mph were reported, blowing lots of dust and eroding soils. Soil moisture was mostly rated very short. Farmers were preparing for spring planting and irrigating wheat. Rangeland and pastures continued to be rated mostly very poor. Livestock producers continued supplementing cattle. Rolling Plains: Dry and windy conditions continued across the region. Cotton farmers were preparing for the upcoming season by fertilizing irrigated fields. Wheat was moisture stressed; a good rain was needed soon to make even an average crop. Livestock generally remained in fair to good shape despite the poor condition of wheat for grazing. Some livestock producers were taking cattle off wheat. Many cattle will be sold soon if rain does not come. Producers continued to supply supplemental feed and hay to livestock. Peaches were just beginning to bloom. Ponds and stock tanks still needed runoff. South: The northern, eastern and western parts of the region received rain, improving rangeland, pastures and crops. In the northern part of the region, Frio, La Salle, Live Oak and McMullen counties reported rain. Soil moisture was mostly short to very short, except in Live Oak County, where it was 70 percent adequate. Frio County producers continued planting corn and sorghum and irrigating wheat and oats. In the eastern part of the region, rainfall ranged from 1.5 to 4 inches. Jim Wells County reported 50 percent adequate soil moisture, and Kleberg and Kenedy counties reported 100 percent adequate. Cool temperatures throughout the week held back spring greening. In the western part of the region, temperatures ranged from 40 degrees at night to 75 degrees during the day. Most of the western counties did not receive any rain, except for Zavala County, where it saved growers of cabbage, spinach, onions and other cro ps one i rrigation. The rain in Zavala County did delay planting of cotton, corn and sorghum throughout most of the week, but it resumed near the weekend. In the southern part of the region, crop producers were held back from planting sorghum and cotton early in the week due to weather, but were able to continue toward the end of the week. Also in that area, vegetable crops were progressing well. Soil moisture was short, supplemental feeding of beef cattle continued, and rangeland and pastures were in good condition. South Plains: The roller coaster weather continued, with high temperatures varying more than 30 degrees from one day to the next. Along with the temperature variations, dry weather, high winds and blowing sand were the norm. Only Scurry County reported scattered showers. Winter wheat and pastures were suffering, and livestock continued to need supplemental feed. Producers were preparing for spring planting in hope of eventually receiving rain. One county reported seeing more widespread use of tillage for herbicide incorporation than in past years. Southeast: Soil moisture throughout the region was mostly in the adequate range, but some counties reported from 50 percent very short to as much as 100 percent adequate. Rangeland and pasture ratings varied widely too, from very poor to excellent, with good to fair ratings being the most common. In Brazoria County, strong winds continued to dry out soils, but grasses were beginning to grow, and livestock remained in fair to good condition. In Chambers County, dry soils were limiting tillage. Also, soils were not warm enough for crop growth. However, Montgomery County reported average temperatures and plenty of moisture. Winter annuals there were showing good growth. Orange County’s warmer temperatures also continued during last week. Rains across the county accelerated the growth of winter annual weeds. In Walker County, soil moisture was good, but warmer soil temperatures were needed for plant growth. Waller County fields remained extremely wet, making any fieldwork a muddy operation. Southwest: Light rain slowed the drying of soils and preserved rangeland quality for a little longer. Windy and cool weather continued to threaten new growth of foliage. Winter wheat and oats were in fair to good condition. Rain during the next three weeks will be crucial for several spring and summer crops. Producers had to provide feed and access to water to maintain the condition of all livestock and wildlife. West Central: Severe drought conditions continued. Up-and-down temperatures with dry, windy weather continued throughout the week. Daytime temperatures were generally mild with cool to cold nights. A few areas reported some scattered showers, which helped crops. Wildfire dangers continued to climb. Many counties were under burn bans. Preparation for spring planting was underway in hope for some rain later. Wheat was suffering and in decline due to drought stress. Wheat producers who graze out wheat to livestock were faced with the decision on whether to graze out or hope for moisture for a grain crop. The pull-off deadline for wheat is March 15 for crop insurance purposes. Rangeland and pastures remained in poor condition and continue to decline due to dry conditions. Some green-up showed in fields with warmer in temperatures, but the green was mostly weeds. Stock tank water levels continued to drop. Supplemental f eeding o f livestock continued. Launching a large satellite aboard an Ariane 5 currently costs around $137 million (€100 million), while doing the same aboard a Falcon 9 rocket would set you back just over $60-70 million (€43-50 million). Jakarta (AsiaNews ) - In the ongoing story of the Malaysian aircraft that went missing March 8 with 239 passengers on board, every day more developments come to the surface that reveal the guilty silence of the authorities and their fatal distractions. Only after several days did the Government of Malaysia admit that the plane might have been hijacked, and now they are studying the possibility that the crew members - or anyone else on the plane - may have contributed to the hijacking. The Thai Air Force stated yesterday that reviewing radar data of 8 March, they realized that there were tentative signs of a plane that was to the west, the Strait of Malacca, shortly after the MH370 flight lost (or interrupted) communication with control towers. Thai authorities admit that at first that did not give much importance to these signals. In Malaysia, the pilot and co-pilot are under suspicion: the former, Zaharie Ahmad Shah, has family ties with Anwar Ibrahim, leader of the Islamic opposition, who in recent days was convicted for sodomy, in order to exclude him from any political struggle. The moment running back Brendan Bigelow spent months preparing for got off to a fast start Tuesday. Two seconds later it was over, up in smoke as the result of a strained hamstring. Or so Bigelow thought. Instead, he opted to finish his 40-yard dash so that he at least had something to show for the representatives of NFL teams in attendance at Cal’s pro day at Memorial Stadium. Bigelow clocked a 4.48-second time in the 40-yard dash, according to several people who timed the event. Not quite the 4.2 Bigelow expected, but pretty impressive for someone who battled through a hamstring injury from the midpoint of his run. “It’s a shocker because I was expecting like a 4.6 or a 4.7,” Bigelow said. “But I ran a pretty good time, even with a pulled hamstring. The 4.48 is a solid time for a running back. Bigelow said he’s hopeful that the 40 or so representatives from 29 NFL teams in attendance factored in his injury and graded him higher. Bigelow worked hard to rebound from a knee injury that dogged him last season. He said his knee is at full strength now. The hamstring injury came out of nowhere, the first time he has had an issue with that part of his body. “I put a lot of work in, I’ve been prepping for this for a while, about three months,” Bigelow said. “It’s devastating, man. I’m always going to keep my head up high and just keep soaring because that’s all I know. The Dallas Cowboys, Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers were the only teams without a representative at Cal on Tuesday. No reason was given. Perhaps it’s because Cal lacks a top-notch prospect for one of the few times in recent memory. There aren’t any sure-fire first-round draft picks among the prospects that worked out Tuesday in front of a crowd that included former Cal standouts such as Marshawn Lynch and Jahvid Best, and current Cal starting quarterback Jared Goff. However, players such as linebacker Khairi Fortt, tight end Richard Rodgers and defensive lineman Deandre Coleman are projected as mid- to late-round picks in the NFL draft in May. All three acquitted themselves well Tuesday. This marked the second time they performed in front of a sizable group of NFL scouts, coaches and front-office types. The first time came at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis in February. Rodgers said he hoped for a better showing than he had in Indianapolis. That’s precisely what he did, by all accounts. Rodgers made several impressive catches, including one on a pass thrown behind him that he tipped into the air, adjusted his body and hauled in as he spun around. That elicited ooohhs and aaahhhs from those on the field and in the stands. Most important, he said, the setup Tuesday played to Rodgers’ strengths in terms of calling for a variety of pass routes. It also helped, he said, that he and his Cal mates were in a familiar setting. “It’s easier just because you’re in your environment and you’ve played college football here for your career,” Rodgers said. “The days leading up to (this) are not as strenuous as in the combine. It showed, too, as Rodgers moved well, ran crisp routes and caught everything he got his hands on, even if the pass was off the mark. A big-bucks plan to inspire employees of an East Bay community college district with management practices gleaned from "The Wizard of Oz" has hit a rainbow roadblock. The problem: The consultants hired by the district were contributors to the Proposition 8 crusade to ban same-sex marriage in California. The Peralta Community College District's journey down the yellow brick road began in January when its board voted to support newly installed Chancellor Jose Ortiz's plan to transform the culture at its Oakland headquarters and four campuses. The first step was a $315,000 contract for Partners in Leadership, a management consulting firm founded by Tom Smith and Roger Connors - co-authors of the New York Times best-seller "The Oz Principle. The book uses the characters from "The Wizard of Oz" to illustrate how a company's success depends on managers being held accountable and not blaming others when things go wrong. Earlier this month, 71 college district managers - who earn anywhere from $67,000 to $215,000 a year - were ordered to sit through two days of jargon-filled training, the first in a scheduled series of such sessions. College staffers who decided to take a look behind the curtain came across campaign finance records showing that at least five Partners in Leadership employees had contributed to Prop. 8, the 2008 ballot measure to ban gay and lesbian marriages. The donors included the company's co-presidents - Smith gave $2,500, while Connors contributed $500. Faster than you can say, "There's no place like home," Ortiz fired off a statement late Monday saying that "in light of this information, I have decided to reconsider Peralta's relationship with (Partners in Leadership) until I have had time to further investigate the matter. Peralta spokesman Jeff Heyman says Ortiz knew about the Prop. 8 contributions, but not until after the college district awarded the contract. Then came our calls asking about the company. "We have policies in support of the LGBT community, and we have to make sure the contract doesn't run counter to those policies," Heyman said. A spokeswoman for Partners in Leadership said company officials weren't available for comment. Not so affirmative: When it comes to affirmative action, Asian Americans appear to be of two minds: the philosophical and the practical. As recently as 2012, a nationwide poll of 4,755 Asian Americans by political science Professors Karthick Ramakrishnan at UC Riverside and Taeku Lee at UC Berkeley found that 75 percent of respondents said they favored programs "to help blacks, women and other minorities get better jobs and educations. In California, support was at 80 percent. "I think the opposition to affirmative action was organized earlier and more effectively than anyone expected," Ramakrishnan said. Three state senators, including Democrat Leland Yee of San Francisco, cited an outcry from Asian American constituents in calling on the Assembly to shelve a constitutional amendment that would have allowed public universities to give admission preference to underrepresented minorities. Those minorities don't include Asian Americans, who fill the ranks at prestige UC campuses in disproportionate numbers. On Monday, legislative leaders consigned the proposed amendment to a long series of statewide hearings. Ramakrishnan, who has spent 14 years studying Asian American voting patterns in California, thinks it was the active minority. "It was like the early stages of the Tea Party," Ramakrishnan said. "They were very well-organized, they knew where the pressure points were, and they went after them. "In this case, it was the fear that the government might take something away from you," Ramakrishnan said. Heavenly: The University of California is about to sign on to help build the world's largest - and probably the most expensive - stargazer. The $1 billion-plus Thirty Meter Telescope will sit atop Hawaii's Mauna Kea volcano. The project, which has been more than a decade in the making, is being spearheaded by UC, Caltech and a group of Canadian universities. China, India and Japan have also signed on as partners. Under the terms to be presented Wednesday to the Board of Regents, UC would pay as much as $175 million in construction costs and nearly $4.8 million in annual maintenance costs. UC says the bulk of its costs would be paid from philanthropic sources. It's trying to raise $50 million from donors for the project. Aside from allowing researchers to collaborate internationally, said UC spokesman Steve Montiel, "this telescope promises to revolutionize our understanding of the universe, and will benefit the eight UC campuses that have vibrant astronomy and astrophysics programs. Moscow’s first Buddhist temple will soon welcome believers – its construction in the northeastern Otradnoye district is scheduled to begin this year. The 3,000-square meters facility will also host cultural and medical centers, a conference room and a soup kitchen. Moscow Buddhists have been waiting for this temple for years. In early 2000s, some hope sparked when the-then Mayor Yury Luzhkov and the head of the Republic of Tyva Sholban Kara-ool signed an agreement on constructing a temple and Tuva cultural and shopping center. It was to be ready by 2008, however, the project was shelved. And finally, unfinished project in Otradnoye reappeared under initiative of the Moscow Buddhist community, Alexander Koybagarov, president of Russia’s Association of Buddhists at Karma Kagyu School told VoR. "The Moscow Buddhist community is close to the approval of the Otradnoye project. The only problem is funding. Anyway, when we last saw the chairman of the Moscow Buddhist Community Dulma Shagdarov, he assured us that they are almost ready to begin the construction". The process is also hampered by the fact that there are over two dozens of Buddhist schools in Moscow. But the temple will belong to only one. However Buddhists don’t care that much about schools or doctrines, they want the temple, says Drikung Mahayana Buddhist, Alexander Dogayev. "Certainly, we need this temple. It will be both a religious facility, and a meeting point of different schools. When I was in the capital of Kalmykia, Elista, I attended the Budda Shakyamuni Temple that hosts events of different schools. It is both cultural, religious as well as meditation and educational center. I’m sure that when a similar temple appears in Moscow, it will extend far beyond religion. As far as I know, there are already plans to invite Buddhist teachers". The construction will begin with the so-called stupa – a mound-like hemispherical structure containing Buddhist relics – it is uniting for all Buddhists, says Alexander Koybagarov. "Stupa is a common space for prayers and meditation, rituals and different Buddhist holidays – Buddha’s Birthday, Nirvana or enlightening lectures of great teachers. This can be a universal and uniting facility. We aren't enemies, we don't clash or compete. I think if we have a stupa and a temple, we will find time and opportunities to practice our doctrine, without disturbing each other, and celebrate common holidays". Moscow Buddhists also hope to see a Buddhist temple as part of Poklonnaya Gora Great Patriotic War Memorial. It already has an orthodox church, a mosque and a synagogue. A stupa construction was planned long ago not only to commemorate all Buddhists fallen in the Great Patriotic War, but also symbolize harmony and integrity of all peoples of Russia. Buddhism was brought to Russia in the beginning of the 17th century by Kalmyk tribes who joined the Empire. The Commissioner of Correctional Services, Mr Sin Yat-kin, said today (March 19) that the penal population has remained steady in recent years, thus facilitating the smooth operation of Hong Kong's penal institutions. Speaking at the Correctional Services Department's annual press conference, Mr Sin said the average daily penal population was 9 206 in 2013, representing a slight decrease of 0.4 per cent from the figure of 9 247 in 2012, and the average occupancy rate was about 80 per cent. Among the penal population, 81 per cent were males and 19 per cent were females. He said, "Although there was only a slight decrease in the average daily penal population for the whole year, we witnessed a decline in the number of persons in custody in the second half of 2013. At the end of 2012, the penal population was 9 297, but it dropped to 9 093 at the end of last year, representing a decrease of 2.8 per cent. We are proactively implementing redevelopment and improvement works to ensure that the correctional facilities can meet modern-day needs. For example, the partial redevelopment project currently under way at the Tai Lam Centre for Women will not only provide 108 additional penal places upon completion, but also enhance existing facilities including those catering for high security risk female persons in custody. The project is scheduled for completion in 2016. Regarding acts of violence and indiscipline in prisons as well as self-harm behaviour, Mr Sin said the CSD places dual emphasis on custodial and rehabilitative services. Discipline and order are of paramount importance to correctional institutions, enabling persons in custody to have a regular living pattern with an organised schedule for work and rest in a secure custodial environment. It allows them to reflect deeply, strengthen their determination to start afresh and plan how to fully utilise their time while serving their sentence, so that they can better equip themselves for reintegration into society upon discharge and turn over a new leaf, he said. In 2013, there were 3 261 disciplinary cases in penal institutions, with 2 157 persons in custody violating prison discipline. Among them, 210 breached discipline three times or above while the number of persons in custody being disciplined for being involved in gambling activities was 132. To strengthen the security of penal institutions and prevent the smuggling of drugs by concealment inside the body, he said the first low-radiation X-ray body scanner was put into full use at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre in early 2013 to replace the previous practice of manual rectal searches. After the new equipment was put into operation, the number of seizures of dangerous drugs in penal institutions was 95 last year, representing a significant decrease of 40 per cent when compared to the 158 seizures in the previous year. There were 67 cases of drugs being concealed inside the body in 2013, representing a significant decrease of 41 per cent over the previous year, and most of them were detected by the X-ray body scanner. As the X-ray body scanner has proved to be highly effective and has also achieved a deterrent effect, the CSD plans to install this security equipment at three institutions, namely Tai Lam Centre for Women, Lo Wu Correctional Institution and Pik Uk Correctional Institution. Furthermore, in the past year, the department has introduced a human presence detection system and a closed circuit television system equipped with a video analytical function into penal institutions, in order to strengthen the security facilities for the prevention of escape and to assist the correctional officers in executing their duties more effectively. The department will continue to review the effectiveness of the systems and explore the feasibility of installing them in other institutions by phases. Last year, the department continued to promote rehabilitation work. With the active encouragement of correctional officers, over 900 adult persons in custody enrolled in part-time academic courses last year and some of them have even achieved bachelor's degrees. In respect of vocational training, having regard to the needs of the market, the CSD keeps on working with various training bodies in providing more than 30 market-oriented vocational training courses to persons in custody who will be released within three to 24 months. Last year, some 1 000 adult persons in custody enrolled in these courses on a voluntary basis. The department has co-operated with the Construction Industry Council in introducing new vocational courses, namely the Bar-bending and Fixing Skill Course and Timber Formwork Skill Course. The department has also worked with the Vocational Training Council to provide courses in Travel Agent Assistant Training and Hong Kong Style Caf? Operation. Mr Sin said that this year the CSD will continue to provide more vocational training courses on trades with a heavy market demand, such as the Professional Taxi Driver Training (Taxi Written Test), Metalwork and Welding Craft Training, Computer Aided Drafting Course, Computer Multi-media Productions and Programming Training. These training courses will help persons in custody equip themselves with vocational skills, thereby facilitating their smooth reintegration into society upon release. The department introduced the first "Waste No Food Scheme" at Lo Wu Correctional Institution last year. Since the implementation of the Scheme, the response has been very encouraging. The participation rate increased from 50 per cent at the start to 80 per cent recently, equivalent to about 950 persons. In the first 11 months after launching the Scheme, LWCI had achieved an accumulative saving of about 16 000 kilograms of rice, 460 kilograms of potatoes and 90 kilograms of wheat flour. Taking rice as an example, the saving is equivalent to 3 200 family-size packs (5 kilograms each) of rice. In view of the favourable response to the Scheme, the CSD has already extended it to Ma Hang Prison and Nei Kwu Correctional Institution. On human resources, Mr Sin said staff members are regarded as the department's most important asset, and this is why the CSD has always allocated resources for their benefit. The CSD also proactively encourages staff to adopt a balanced and healthy life style, improve the professionalism and excellence of their services, and continue to further foster the department's culture of integrity and probity. To promote anti-crime awareness, enhance understanding of the detrimental effects of drugs and disseminate the message of supporting offender rehabilitation among young people, the department implemented the Rehabilitation Pioneer Project five years ago. Recently new elements have been introduced, including organising a drama and music performance under the title "Creation and Rehabilitation". Last year, and for the first time, some 300 secondary school students were invited to attend a drama performance inside a maximum security prison. The drama was created, directed and performed by persons in custody who have committed serious crimes. The persons in custody also took part in interactive discussions with the students and shared their experience regarding the serious consequences of committing crimes. Judging by the positive feedback from the participating students, the event's objectives were achieved. This year, the CSD will continue to enhance the project and organise activities related to moral and civic education for the young generation. Mr Sin concluded, "The department went through a busy year in 2013, and 2014 will undoubtedly be another year full of challenges. In the coming year, my colleagues and I will continue to do our utmost to serve the community with dedication and commitment for the stability of Hong Kong. Want to go back to legit OS0No one will take bbm channels seriously is... i want to get a new phone. a smartphone. i will switch from symbian. -big screen - to replace my laptop for writing emails, chatting, and web surfing. just a quick "note 3 problems" google search made me drop it from the "get" list so i'm down to g2 vs z30. this is what i found form lurking around this forum. and i have so question also. -build quality - okish. issues with some devices. Z30 Earpiece Volume... -cannot add preferential tones to contacts - need paid apps Hub++, bebuzz - if true wtf? i had this option since 2006. -The text input area is quite small - it starts off as a single line and grows to only four, so composing longer texts can be a bit annoying. There's no character or message part counters. again wtf? no character counter for sms? i'm traveling a lot. more than 6 7 month a year i;m away from home and using roaming. so sending more that needed messages makes a big influence on my payment slip. i found out therom these forums that bemaps or whatever the native bb maps are called are not so good, but anyway i,m going to use heremaps from nokia that i recently saw can get installed on bb or igo maps coz offline maps is a must as i travel a lot and roaming data is not an option at ~3Eur/MB. http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3... i. played with the g2 and z10 in vodafone stores. coudn;t find a z30 but i got the idea what the os looks like a little bit. design and build quality. z10 looks and feels better for me. to much glossy plastic on g2. price: i can get lg g2 16gig for about 30eur less than z30 and the lg g2 32gig for about 30eur more. screen: better and bigger on g2. call quality and reception signal: ok on both phones but nothing outstanding like i hopped for bb wit their paratek antenna. screen protection no protection vs gorilla glass 2. i am no expert but is the z30 screen on par with the gorilla glass? in some thread i posted above the screen scratches easily. i don;t know how gorilla glas handles in real world but from the videos on youtube looks kind of good stuff. speakers. seems that both phones have their share of problems here. especially the z30 with the ear peace. many ppl complain that is not loud enough. on the g2 is the other way, external speakers are **** and the earpiece is ok. camera. 13mpix vs 8 mpix. but there are a ton of ppl compalining on g2 forums about the **** quality they have on their phones. don;t know compared to what but for my eye for both phones the picturesc taken look ok. nothing spectacular but better than my e50 1. GPRS Yes on z30 vs Class 12 (4+1/3+2/2+3/1+4 slots), 32 - 48 kbps on g2. i'm no expert but i hope they are the same and the gsm arena guys were too lazy to fill that up for z30. Speed HSDPA, HSUPA, LTE on z30 vs HSDPA, 42 Mbps; HSUPA, 21 Mbps; LTE, Cat4, 50 Mbps UL, 150 Mbps DL/ EV-DO Rev. A, up to 3. WLAN Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, dual-band, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi hotspot on z30 vs Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, dual-band, Wi-Fi Direct, DLNA, Wi-Fi hotspot on g2. isn't ac=dual band? and seems that z30 is capable of DLNA also. no Infrared port for z30. i don't know how many times i'm going to use this except just to mess with my friends or stores tvs. gps seems the same on paper, don't know what maker the antenna is but from the forums there are issues with some devices for both z30 and g2 especially on US carries. i'm from europe so i don;t know if they have this problem here but i 90% of the posters with gps problems are form US. battery life: both phones have very good battery revies some g2 owners bragging about going even to 50hs bat life. don;t know what they did with the phone to get that but seems that 1,5+ days with low-med usage is common. my brother has a s3. without apps and stuff doesn't lag but he dismissed the google privacy options and now 50% of the phone is unusable. not that i lie to myself that my privacy will be safe with bb but at least i wont willing fully give my privacy away with some clicks. nor my privacy is that important. i don;t do drug deals, plan mass murders or keep incriminating pictures on my phone. but i just don;t like the idea that i gave the keys to my phone to somebody just to use some fancy app. when does usually bb releases new phones? are they going to launch the next phone z50 or whatever any time soon? iknow there are rumors and stuff but what is the bb release history schedule. samsung usually launches new phones in feb or mach. iphone a little later april - may - june. you get the point. i know the g3 is around the corner but i.m not getting it coz it will be way too over priced in the beginning. maybe next year will be at a normal price. what about the blacklist apps or options. so far looks the only aps that have call blocking can block all calls. i have this option on symbian i don;t need to pay for it. specific phone numbers, contacts, unknown, not in contacts etc can;t be blocked so far by no app. sorry for my bad grammar. Yet we rarely hear about the kids who have to endure such squalid treatment. When you think of hospitalized children, you think of emergencies like broken arms and asthma attacks. But young, mentally-ill inpatients are tragically common. In fact, one in ten hospitalized kids are admitted due to a mental health condition, according to a new study to be published in the journal Pediatrics next month. Depression is the most common and costly reason kids are turning up in the ER, accounting for 44 percent of all mental-health admissions of young people ages three to 20, and $1.33 billion annually in hospital charges. Other common reasons for hospitalization are bipolar disorder and psychoses, two relatively rare conditions in the general population. Yet both often require frequen hospital care. “The fact that they’re hospitalized as frequently as they are means that these kids are really quite sick and we need to be paying attention to how to provide the best care for them,” says Dr. Naomi Bardach, lead author and assistant professor of pediatrics at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital. Mental-health hospitalizations for kids are on the rise—up 24 percent from 2007 to 2010. For mood disorders like depression and bipolar disorder, the hospitalization rate has jumped 80 percent since 1997. While the need for urgent care continues to grow, the number of facilities throughout the country equipped to treat these children are steadily declining, at considerable costs to families. And even when urgent care is adequate, the reality of mental health is such that by the time most children end up in emergency rooms, the system has already failed them. Late last year, Marie Yates’ 17-year-old son, Steven (diagnosed with schizophrenia, autism and bipolar disorder) was denied a bed in a Phoenix mental health facility after he used scissors to cut his throat in a suicide attempt at school. He stayed for 11 days in the hospital before being discharged. So when Steven became suicidal again in January, Yates took him to another ER, this time one linked with a mental health care center. Again, she was told there was no space for her child. Steven was eventually admitted by the hospital, but only after Yates physically brought her son to the Behavioral Health Center a block away. “You might have to call the cops,” she said as a staff member opened the door, “because I’m not leaving. Emily Bell, CEO for the trade association representing Arizona’s behavioral health workers, described the number of inpatient beds for children in the state as “woefully short. Boise’s Intermountain Hospital is just one of the most recent hospitals to reduce its capacity for psychiatric patients—cutting 17 beds last year. Now, when the 30 adolescent spaces get full, children are sent to neighboring emergency rooms like the one at St. Luke’s Hospital, which has neither the space nor the resources to treat non-life-threatening psychiatric issues. St. CBS also documented the problem on 60 Minutes in January. It highlighted the emergency room at Yale-New Haven Hospital in Connecticut, where 52 psychiatric beds were full, leaving seven young people waiting for care—five of them for at least three days. Sadly, these anecdotes are neither new nor unique. In the 2006 landmark case Rosie D. v. Romney, a Massachusetts judge ruled in favor of thousands of children with serious emotional disabilities, some of whom spent days lying in hallway hospital beds waiting for treatment. The court found that by inappropriately detaining or denying access to children in need of mental-health treatment and failing to provide home-based services, the state had violated the Federal Medicaid Act. Massachusetts has made real progress (PDF) in complying with the ruling—the number of children screened and provided with services for behavioral health conditions has increased significantly, as has the number of professionals tasked with providing these services. Nationally, though, the problem persists. The issue of access to mental-health care took on a tragic urgency after 20-year-old Adam Lanza, a boy with a long history of mental illness, killed 26 people at Sandy Hook Elementary school in 2012. It resurfaced again last year when it was discovered that Virginia State Senator Creigh Deeds’ son, Gus, had been turned away from a mental-health care facility in Virginia hours before attacking his father and killing himself. Though both the 23-year-old Gus Deeds and Adam Lanza were technically young adults at the time of their attacks, their problems had started years earlier. And since half of all mental health disorders start by 14 years of age (PDF), earlier intervention and quality care has a direct impact on an individual’s life, and on the overall mental health of the country. Following high-profile tragedies like Sandy Hook, politicians have been quick to offer platitutdes about reforming the country’s broken mental-health system—but such rhetoric rarely results in lasting change. “There hasn’t been enough action or investment,” says Darcy Gruttadaro, Director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Child & Adolescent Action Center. “As soon as a financial crisis or economic downturn happens, often mental health is back on the chopping block,” Gruttadaro says. “And that’s a penny wise and a pound foolish because we end up paying ultimately when we don’t provide adequate service and supports. Indeed, overall state mental-health budgets are continually being cut. A report from NAMI found that states cut over $1.6 billion from their mental health agency budgets from fiscal year 2009 to 2012. When you add in cuts to other services that affect mental-health programs like Medicaid, ++the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors (NASMPHD) (PDF) estimates the cuts end up at $4.35 billion. As suicide is the third leading cause of death in young people ages 15-25, few would disagree that hospital beds are needed to help stabilize kids in crisis—though child health experts agree that a hospital shouldn’t be the first or only option. But for many parents, it is. A series of focus groups led by Maryland’s Department of Health found that even though families consistently reported hospitals to be unhelpful, the emergency department was the service accessed most often by families with children “in crisis,” e.g. displaying violent behavior or threatening self-harm. Along with judgmental treatment, the parents consistently complained of long delays and inability to access treatment: “We were there three days waiting for a bed,” one parent said. When asked “what would help,” families spoke about the desire to skip the ER in favor of direct urgent mental-health services, facilities that have been proven to reduce the need for inpatient psychiatric beds by up to 75 percent. Further, these families stressed the need for more individualized treatment and services like “wraparound care,” a community-based approach that involves a team of people dedicated to the well-being of the child. Indeed, experts note that more targeted prevention, outreach, and treatment services would in fact reduce the need for expensive and ineffective hospital care. A Grade nine St Cyprian’s Grammar School learner is lucky to be alive after he was stabbed with a pair of scissors by a fellow pupil. The incident took place on Monday afternoon, in full view of the learner’s mother, who was waiting in her vehicle to pick up her son after school. She saw her son and a friend walking towards the car, when another boy came up to her son and grabbed him. ‘When I saw this I immediately ran up to them and tried to pull them apart. More parents, who were in the area, also came to assist. When I pulled him away from the boy, I saw that he was bleeding in his neck. There was a gaping wound, which was apparently inflicted with a pair of scissors. I immediately rushed him to hospital, where the doctor said that if the stab wound was two centimetres closer, it would have punctured the jugular vein and my son would have bled to death,” the distraught mother said on Tuesday. She added that her son had to receive seven stitches and that a nurse who attended to him was able to place the tip of her finger inside the wound. Apparently the attack was sparked by a quarrel between the two learners earlier in the day. The mother added that, although the school had been very supportive towards her son following the incident, she had decided to take him out of the school because she fears for his safety. “I cannot let my child go back to school while his attacker is still there. Bullying in schools is becoming more and more commonplace. Parents are paying for their children to get an education, not to have their lives put in danger by bullies. The mother also said that she had opened a case at the police station against the alleged attacker. Her concerns regarding bullying were on Tuesday further highlighted when a mother of a Northern Cape High School learner came forward, indicating that her son, a Grade 9 learner, had also been a victim of apparent bullying recently. Her son was allegedly assaulted by a fellow Northern Cape High learner, apparently following racist remarks. The incident, which took place directly outside the school’s premises before school started in the morning, was captured on cellphone by another learner. In the video, a male learner, dressed in school uniform, is clearly seen verbally assaulting, taunting, pushing, hitting and rugby-tackling the boy to the ground, who remains passive and silent and only retaliates when he is fisted in the face by the other boy. Numerous other learners, also dressed in school uniform, are seen recording the fight with their cellphones, while no attempts are made to stop the fight. Cigarette smoke also wafts into view. The mother indicated that her son had been the victim of racist remarks before the incident, with the learner involved in assaulting her son reportedly calling him a “k*****boetie” and “k**lie-maatjie” because he had black, coloured and Indian friends. “After one of my son’s best friends, a black learner, died, my son was sent to a psychiatric facility because he was struggling to deal with the loss. When he returned to school the boy involved in assaulting him asked him ‘where is your ‘k*%#r-boetie’ now?’ and he became upset and they exchanged words. “After this incident, which was captured on cellphone, he told me that the school was going to phone me because he had been involved in a fight with the boy. The two received exactly the same punishment. It was only later after I saw the video, that I realised my son was actually the victim, and not the instigator. When I approached the school’s headmaster, Henk Brand, with the footage and demanded a harsher sentence for the other boy, he reacted nonchalantly, saying that according to the school’s code of conduct, learners involved in a fight received the same punishment,” the mother on Tuesday said. She has subsequent to the incident, also taken her son out of the school and is making other arrangements to have him admitted to another school. “I think because this boy is a rugby player at the school, he is being protected. This while my son and other children run the risk of being bullied by him. I will not put my son’s life in danger by sending him back to Northern Cape High. Brand has not been forthcoming in finding a solution to this bullying problem. While I might have been outspoken in exposing this bully, other children keep quiet, fearing victimisation. It is about them that I worry and I urge other parents to monitor their children’s behaviour and intervene if they suspect bullying,” she added. St Cyprian’s Grammar School headmaster, Reverend Marcellus Conway, said on Tuesday that he was not prepared to comment on the incident because the matter was still under investigation. Northern Cape High School headmaster, Henk Brand, said he was aware of the incident at the school and confirmed that he had seen the video footage. He did, however, deny that the incident was related to bullying. “Both learners received the same punishment, as prescribed in the school’s code of conduct. Although the incident happened outside of the school’s premises and outside of school hours, both were dressed in school uniform and thus steps were taken.
